We visited the Paliam Palace from the Kochi airport after our flight was delayed by over 4 hours. Paliam palace is located in North Kochi - approximately 20km north of the airport. The Palace isn't that big, but it has a lovely museum. Apparently, this palace was used by the King of Kochi briefly, but it was the house of the Prime Minister of Kochi. Not really very palatial, it was built by the Dutch, sometime in the 1800's. Do visit if you have time in Kochi. It was very beautiful.

The Pailam Palace is actually the Paliath Achan's palace (Kovilakam), and was built by the Dutch. Paliam(or Paliyam) is actually the name of the family. There are two structures or buildings that can be visited by the public, “The Paliam Palace” and “The Paliam Nalukettu”.

The Paliam Palace was built by the Dutch. It is said that this was the seat of the Paliath Achan. Paliath Achan is the name given to the oldest male surviving member of the Paliam family. The Paliath Achan’s were the Prime Minister’s for the Kingdom of Cochin. The Paliam family was also the biggest Hindu joint family until the partition in 1952.

The Paliam Palace is magnificent in its architecture. On entering the Palace there is a big elephant carved in wood(someone said it was carved from a single wood, not sure of that though). It is also said that this wooden elephant mounted on wooden platform with wheels was a toy used by the children of the family. The Palace is extremely spacious and there is excellent airflow, and hence is “air cooled”. There are two levels for this building. The upper level houses the Palace Pooja room, a huge verandah and the bedroom. The bedroom display a wooden bed is built with different types of medicinal wood and is supposed to relieve the person lying on the bed from different ailments.

The Palace pooja room has displays of the various items used for pooja, like lamps, bells, conch shells . There is also a display of the “Nettipattam” a distinctive golden head covering for the elephant during Temple festivals and processions. From the size of the “Nettipattom” the elephant that adorned this must have been huge!

There are guides who will describe the various areas of interest and some history of the Palace. Currently there is no entry fee, however it is presumed that there will be some charges that will come in place for the visit to the Palace. Photography is not allowed within the Palace.
