The grand Neelkanth temple in Kalinjar Fort, along with the huge Gajantak Shiva statue, as well as many stone sculpted statues are the main attractions.Their history has been told from the Gupta period to the Chandela period.
Take a time of at least 3 hours and take food and water with you as it is not available in the grand fort complex.

Enter it from Chitrakut or from Banda . It can be fitted into a day trip. Be ready with your walking shoes and try asking for help. There are some local volunteers who take you through this awesome place. Carry your own food and drinking water. The temple which you have to take steps for is a delight and leaves you awestruck. A lot of history very well preserved .

Majestic Shiva temple midway on the hill, and Fort is simple n on top of a large tabletop mountain. More than fort, it is the ancient Shiva temple is captivating...many carvings n devotees with lot of faith. Access is steep climb down from fort top of mountain, and steep climb back up. But its worth it if u love old idols n temple structures. Or you climb the hill up to temple, if u don't have car. Carry your water n snacks

I visited the place on a two day outing to kalinjar-panna-khajuraho. It is 90Km from my present abode ie Satna, MP. During December weather was good.Fort includes a shiva temple, venkat vihari temple, raani mahal, aman mahal and few other mahals located here and there. This place is good for people interested in history and archaeology. Further those who want to see how India/ASI has failed to protect its monuments/history are also welcome. Place was a potential tourist attraction and had been ruined. Last 5 KM to fort from satna side was horrible. I hope its get repaired soon. Further Kalinjar is very small town so dont expect that you will get anything hygienic to eat. Better carry your own stuff. Peace lovers may find place attractive as it is practically deserted and you can spend sometime without being bothered by anything/anyone.

I have recently visited Kalinjar Fort with a local guide named Ajay Singh who works out of Khahurajo, his signs are by the boating lake opposite the main temple. An excellent one day excursion with plenty to see. Many of the buildings are intact and the lower temple is impressive. My guide is quite passionate about the local history and has also guided documentary makers from the history channel. He was also able to show me rock paintings on the lower part of the mountain which was an unexpected bonus and an indication as to how many millennia the area has been important for human habitation. He also made sure that I didn't wear any deodorant or perfume to avoid any problems with the local bees.... there were no problems, but that's the kind of attention to detail I appreciate.
I will add that Ajay says other people are claiming to be him so make sure you get the right guy.

#Kalinjarforte #Neelkanthtemple #Samudramanthan #Shivji
In Sanskrit the meaning of Kalinjar is - The destroyer of time. 'Kal' is time and 'jar' is destruction. Legend says after samudra manthan Hindu God, Lord Shiva, drank the poison and his throat became blue (hence the name Neel (blue) Kantha (throat)). He came to Kalinjar and overcome the 'Kal' i.e. he achieved victory over death. That's why the Shiva temple at Kalinjar is called Neelkanth Temple.
Neelkanth temple is situated in the southern part of Kalinjar fort. We have to walk down165 stairs to reach this beautiful temple.
In front of garbhgrah there is a roofless rectangular area which has sixteen pillars. These pillars are beautifully carved.
The pillars and walls of temple have transcripts. It is believed that these transcripts have the secret of treasure hidden in the fort. But the secret is not yet resolved.

This fort is basically the combination of two type of Forts" the Forest Fort" and " the Mountain Fort". Every Ruler of that period wanted to see their flag on the top of it because it was very very tough to win this fort. Babur came to India in 1526 and soon after him Humayun. But Humayun was defeated by Sher Shah Suri in the Battle of Chausa and the Battle of Kannauj and returned back to Afghanistan due to the fear of Sher Shah...thereby ending the Mughal rule in India. Soon after Shershah wanted to conquer this fort and came with his army to capture it. They surrounded this fort and started bombing with the canons but as the fort was atop a mountain it was not easy to bomb it and one of the canon balls rolled down back and fell in their Artillery and gunpowder stock and their was a heavy blast, due to which She Shah was heavily burned and later he died. Knowing about the death of Sher Shah the Moughals Came Back to India and started ruling again...and thus came Humayun,Akbar, Jahangir and finally Shah Jahan...Who built the TAJ MAHAL.
Now for the Review Part the fort is in dilapidated stage as almost 75% of the building are damaged. But the Best part to Visit here is the Shiva Temple. This is one of the rarest shiva Temples in the World called the "Neel Kantheshwar". It is Believed that the water through the neck of the Lord Shiva Keeps flowing through out the year.
It also has a very Huge Natraj Statue. This complex contains a number of ponds which are said to have medicinal effect and its good for health is you take bath in the at least once in life.
How To Reach?
If you are coming by Flight so the nearest airport would be either Lucknow or the Khajuraho Airport, from there you have to take train to "BANDA" or you can book a Taxi and come to Banda.
Or if you are coming through Train you Come Banda(BNDA).
From Banda, Kalinjer is approximately 65 Kms.
Once you reach Kalinjer you will be able to see the fort. The car or the Taxi will take you directly to the top of the mountain, to the entry point of the FORT.
BEST TIME:
Its open throughout the year, but i would personally suggest you to go only during the winters i.e.. from NOV to FEB as the weather is pleasant and the scenic beauty is awesome, ONE thing more, for daily timing do visit between 10 AM to 4PM.
Tickets:
Its Rupees 15 per person.
PS: do not forget to taste the desi "PEDA" sold by the shops at the entry of the temple gate...true INDIAN VILLAGE PEDA
