We were the only non-Indian visitors.
From the outside the building appears rather inconspicuous, but once you cross the threshold, a magnificent interior is revealed. The building is also highly complex and very tall. There are great figures on each of the very impressively designed floors and the roof terrace offers a wonderful view of the surrounding city.
The people serving in this temple were also extremely friendly and helpful. As far as this was linguistically possible, they provided explanations.
The crowning conclusion of our visit was a procession. For this purpose, one of the huge figures of the temple was hoisted onto a pedestal, and then this construction was carried out of the temple by 6 strong community members and then through the streets of the surrounding area.
Most impressive scenario.

Madurai is a temple city where you can visit on pilgrimage.
Apart form that you can enjoy the food especially the non-vegetarian that is of true taste of Tamil authenticity. Temperature is quite hot even on winter days. Three days can be spent going around Madurai and explore the beauty of the city.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Koodal Azhagar Temple, is a unique and famous historical temple constructed in the Dravidian architecture. Koodal Alagar in Tamil means Beautiful Madurai refers to Lord Vishnu. The centrally located temple is beautifully sculpted and carved by adding different shades of colour..
With Lord Vishnu as the main deity in the form of Sri Koodal Azhagar, this temple is one of the 108 Divya-Deshams. The presence of three different postures of Vishnu at such close proximity to each other .makes this temple a rare one
The temple is built in huge area in traditional style with big front Gopuram and beautiful Vimanam. Thousands of pilgrims flock here every day and most importantly during summer to offer their prayers.
The temple is a glaring example of un-parallel craftsmanship of a past era.

It is a birth place of the famous pasuram(Nalayira Divyaprabandham) "Pallandu Pallandu" in praise of God Vishnu by one of the alwars Periyazhwar. It has got a very glorious and old history attached with it.
The Ashtanga Vimana is unique and the first tier is homed for God Suryanarayanar in standing pasture, the second tier has a sannadhi for God Ranganathar in lying position, in the ground floor Koodalazhagar in sitting pasture. We are allowed to go to top two tiers of gopuram and view it. There are more to write on this beautiful temple. This temple is in Madurai. It was partly built by Pandya kings and later developed by Krishnadevaraya and nayak kings.

Koodal Azhagar Temple in Madurai, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha,. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Koodal Azhagar and his consort Lakshmi as Mathuravalli.
A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines. The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram, the gateway tower. The temple is originally believed to be built by the Pandyas, with later additions by the Vijayanagar and Madurai Nayak kings who commissioned pillared halls and major shrines of the temple during the 16th century. K.oodal Azhagar is believed to have appeared to slay the demon Somuka who abducted the four Vedas. A Nice Temple to visit. It is near to Madurai Meenakshi Temple

How many steps are there in this temple; and is there any special darshan for senior citizens?
Also, would it take 4 hours to see the entire temple?
Thanks for the guidance.

The lower section where Abhaya Venkateshwara Swamy is easily accessible. But Surya Narayana and Ranganathaswamy on 2nd and 3rd floor is difficult and steep to climb for elderly people. They charge a nominal amount for entrance. Must be about 40 steps. One and half hrs should be enough.
