Stopped here for a brief visit with the kids in Dec 2019. It wasn't too busy in the late morning. Fairly typical South Indian style of temple.

Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam is a typical South Indian Hindu temple smack bang in the centre of Johor Bahru, which feels weird when there is a shopping centre in the backdrop as you stand in front of the entrance. As South Indian temples go, this is fairly typical. There’s a large and colourful gopuram above the front door and to be honest, if you’ve seen South Indian style temples before, this is no different. The one thing that was different was being asked to wash my feet upon entering the temple in addition to taking my shoes off.
An interesting feature of the temple are the relief sculptures that also include explanatory notes about what’s being depicted. Other sculptures of Hindu deities have their name printed below, which is a great way to identify the characters. So an extra star for that.
This temple is also where the annual fire pot ceremony is held and the chariots that are used for that are kept on display in a building next to the temple.

Johor Bahru’s downtown is in a state of change and flux. This feature is adorable and to an extent interesting, but it is short lived and gives but a taste of the Indian culture that so permeates the daily lives of the citizens of Johor. When in city centre it is worth a visit but for me it doesn’t beckon.

Beautiful hindu temple. There are two more Arumilgu Temples in Johor Bahru but this one definitely defines the passion, the resilience and the dedication of all locals that find here their inner peace. This temple is side by side with the railway and trains are often part of the ceremonies. When a train is passing we can feel the ground shaking...of course that the most important is paying attention when crossing the railway though it's not very busy (double caution when you have kids because this is a very funny place for kids to run or to jump on the railways!). We stayed for the service and we really enjoyed. The ceremony is so deeply magical that will take us to another sensation. Of freedom. Don't miss out this temple :-)

It was my first time in a hindu temple so everything seemed interesting and quite unusual. There are many intriguing pictures, statues and decorations. It's free to visit (at least the interior court because I didn't enter inside the building not being sure if it's Ok for a non-hindu believer and having no idea about what is right to do and what is wrong). You just need to take off the shoes.

Johor Bahru is a city made up of a wide variety of people with different cultures and places of worship, such as mosques for Muslim, Chinese and Hindu temples as well as Christian Churches. Most of these places of worship were built in the 19th century when Chinese and Indian migrants came to Johor in search of a better life. In 1885, the late Sultan Abu Bakar developed Johor Bahru from a fishing village into an administrative and business capital of Johor and this development of Johor is being continued by the Royal family till today. In the city of Johor Bahru today within a small vicinity there are five different type of places of worship. The Masjid Abu Bakar, Arulmigu Rajamariamman Devasthanam, Chinese Temple, Church of Holy Light and Gurudawara Sahib, all within the vicinity of Jalan Trus and Jalan Wong Ah Fook, reflecting the harmony of different faiths all existing together for more than 100 years.
