Unfortunately, the home has been undergoing renovations since the summer of 2019 and still not open to the public. The state of New York and National Park Service needs to make this site a priority. In 1859, Harriet purchased the land form Governor Seward and made this her home for the rest of her life. We would have loved to have seen the inside of her home. The museum and visitor's center is located behind the her home and the home for the aged. Ample parking and room for RVs. Hope to return one day once her home is open.

The website about Harriet Tubman is not very informative. Try to visit the home when you can take a tour. If not, you can arrive and tour the visitor center before it closes at 3pm.

Harriet’s home is the brick house at the road. Harriet created a home for the aged, a white house on the property. Both are closed (even during tours) but you can walk up and look in the windows.

Tip: Visit the William Seward House before (you’ll want to book a tour) for context about Harriet and her relationship to the Seward family. The Seward’s sold her the land where her homes are located.

Tip: Road construction makes it difficult to access the site from Auburn. Use Google maps and allow for extra time for the detour.

The state of New York needs to step up at the plate and cough up some $$$$ to rehab this site.
Part of the national park system yet counting on state money to rehab.
Tours available- refer to website

The site is owned by the AME Zion Church which does what they can to maintain it. Ms. Tubman’s house is closed (because of COVID restrictions and because it’s being restored), When we visited a National Park Service ranger conducted an excellent tour. A visitor center on the property gives an excellent overview of Harriet Tubman’s life and legendary accomplishments.

The brick house is the home where she lived but it was fenced off probably for renovations . We took photos and headed to her gravesite.

The visitors center is very nicely done. The ranger gave a captivating, 45 minute educational discussion about this incredible woman. Harriet Tubman accomplishes so much more than participating with the Underground Railroad. Thank you for this wonderful educational historical gem!

The trip starts with a dramatic talk about Harriet Tubman’s history. This was followed by a tour of the house. Given the times, This is a must.
