Cutest activity - a real favorite and perfect way to escape the afternoon heat. We made super realistic tiny udon tempura shrimp, takoyaki, strawberry tart. We all enjoyed making miniature food , even kids ages 8, 10. Easy, detailed, enthusiastic instruction and demonstration. Small group and very personal. We loved this!

OMG! My family and I had a fabulous time visiting with Mayuka san! She was so kind and gracious with my two children, ages 14 and 11, and me and my wife as first timers to make miniature food models. She is an excellent teacher and very patient.

She has a very cute studio which was very homey and calm. It was actually a very relaxing experience as concentrating to shape and mold the clay as well as color it the correct shade was quite zenlike in my opinion. My children enjoyed the fun nature of making clay look like real food. lol.

We would love to visit with Mayuka san again when we visit Kyoto next. We are already contemplating what we will make next time! :)

Arigato gozaimasu, Mayuka san!

The experience was so fun! Mayuka, the instructor, was very nice and helpful. I loved to learn about the history of making this food and also I loved learning more about Kyoto. Definitely recommend!

This class was worth every penny! I took this class this past May and thought I had left a review, but when I realized I didn’t, I felt the need to come write a review because it was one of the best memories I had from my trip to Japan! Mayuka is so kind and talented, and she explained the process of making clay miniatures in such detail! I went alone and had such a blast making my food miniature! We laughed a lot and while making the minature was fun, Mayuka’s bright and sunny personality is really what made this experience so memorable. If you are looking for something unique and maybe a little off the more traditional path when it comes to things to do in Kyoto, I would 100% recommend this class!

Such a unique activity to do while staying in Kyoto, I highly recommend to anyone who wants to have a memorable experience that will not only provide insight into the practice of fake food making, but Japanese culture generally!

What a wonderful way to spend a cold morning. If you are templed out - feel the need to take home something that you have made which will remind you of staring at the windows of Japanese cafes wondering what to eat and will be something quite quirky - then you really need to go to this class. I made something that was listed as hard - but it wasn't difficult at all with Mayuka's expert tuition. She made it easy. A bit tricky to find as it is tucked away at the back of the Shikiami Concon building - but if you put the address in googlemaps - you will find it.

Mayuka was the best teacher in the world (and possibly one of the nicest people I have ever met!) She speaks very good English and teaches you to make miniature food in such a clear and fun way.

It was very easy to pick up the miniature food technique, and come away with a creation to show off about! She is also very chatty and a great person to meet, and so talented.

Mayuka was so hospitable, and offered us tea and Japanese snacks whilst we worked on our miniature food. She also took photos of us and sent us a link to them that same day so we could show off on our instagrams.

This would be great for everyone, young and old, as she adjusts to your skill level - kids would love it as well as couples and families with older children (like us). The class was well worth the price (I would have paid much more!) and this was my favourite activity in Kyoto - I highly recommend.

We enjoyed every minute of our day today: Mayuka is a local from Kyoto who is intent on creating meaningful walking tours and workshops for people visiting Kyoto. My husband and 2 daughters (aged 9 and 10) spent over an hour visiting the various areas of Kyoto learning about how Maiko girls train to become Geisha girls in the Gion district, seeing ancient symbols in street ways to ward off evil or welcome blessings, visiting local ancient temples and beautiful gardens, meeting local artisans of pickled food and paper making, eating a superb lunch at a small traditional noodle shop with the best soba and udon we’ve ever tasted, and then onward to Mayuka’s little workshop. We made our lunch in miniature based on photos we took and Mayuka’s gentle guidance. Mayuka made the whole day so very easy: after our workshop, she even supplied us with some more local tips for good food, coffee and beer. She readily answers any questions you have before or after your day. If I could rate her higher, I would! Thank you Mayuka for making our time in Kyoto so special.

The afternoon in Kyoto with Mayuka was a highlight of my trip! She is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and was able to offer insights into the city that would be hard to come by otherwise. Everything from Mayuka’s warm and authentic personality to the creative afternoon making the mini food makes the perfect experience for travelers looking for a refreshing, playful, insightful and memorable day in Kyoto. This review is for the Airbnb experience, and I’d definitely return to Bonchi the next time in Kyoto for a mini food workshop and to reconnect with Mayuka.
