Not recommended. Go to Nara Harushika Sake instead.

Decent but overpriced sake. English tour is unpleasant due to tour guide whose every word spoken reeks of narcissism and arrogance. Not an experience I would recommend.

Go to another sake place instead. I recommend Nara Harushika.

Excellent sake tasting experience. Have as little or as much as you like in the self service sake machines.
We loved it!
Nice atmosphere and was a lovely walk along the river to get there for us.

Cozy place to learn about sake

We just visited the place by chance, but if you make a reservation beforehand you can make a tour in the brewery. The guide is native English speaking and really fun and informative to talk to. We could join the tasting that took place after a tour and received really good explanations to the different types we tried. They are also really considerate of your luggage and you can send your purchase to your last hotel before your journey in Japan ends .

My friends and I had the best time!! Very knowledgeable and experienced English speaking tour guide who is also one of the sake brewers. Had no idea how difficult sake is to brew and perfect, so much more respect for sake now. The sake we tried was delicious and naturally we all HAD to buy a bottle cause it was just too good. Just a short walk from the centre of Kyoto. More than worth the money!!

What a fantastic find! Our guide was informative and the sake was delicious. Wirth the trip. Make sure you get the English-tour for all the information.

Best sake ever tasted!

We had an incredible experience here! George did an amazing job explaining all of the sake and it was unlike we had ever tasted. It was the best sake we have ever had! Very impressed with the value and quality.

5 of us did the saké tour. The owner (who is a 15th generation inherited) gave us an English guided tour of the brewery out the back, followed by a personal tasting of 5 different types with generous servings. Multiple merchandise options. You can get very tipsy at an very affordable price.

Great sake experience with amazing staff

I went with two other friends and ordered the 5-sake tasting, of which I loved two particular kinds. They were so delicious that I ended up buying the bottles!

The staff were so friendly and helpful. What was amazing was that this American employee who was a former NYC banker/sake sommelier attended to us explaining everything we were curious about sake. He was very knowledgeable and also told us that he was learning sake-making at the brewery as "an apprentice." I never knew sake had this deep history - the brewery was 300 years old with the 15th brewery master, who himself served the 5 sakes for us!

This was truly an amazing experience in Kyoto and I would recommend this place to anyone who is interested in not only tasing the delicious sake, but also learning about it in depth!

Excellent tour for a sake beginner like myself

I did the 5-sake tasting, which at 1,000 yen is incredible value. George, a New Yorker, appeared from the back of the brewery where he was working away to guide me through the tasting, as he does for all English speakers who visit. He is very knowledgeable about Sake, and gave a crash course in the method of brewing sake. The tasting demonstrates the difference that pasteurisation and polishing % has on the wine. Considering that the tasting was so affordable, I was expecting a bit of upselling, but I was recommended some very affordable gifts that are easier for me to transport home. George was very generous with his time and I would recommend this tour to any English speaker with an interest in sake who is visiting Kyoto.

Excellent introduction into Japanese sake

We had a great experience at the brewery. It's a microbrewery with only 4 people working at it. But Matsui Brewery boasts almost 300 years of history, of which almost 200 years at the current site. First, we were given a tour over the brewery by the 15th generation owner, Matsui san. Then we had a tasting session with a nice American chap, Jorge, a former Wall Street banker, who now works at the brewery. The sake was amazing and the presentation was very interesting. So overall, we enjoyed the experience very much and recommend it to anyone who wants to know anything about sake.
