In the workshop handwoven items are made using the traditional backstrap loom weaving method. The process is demonstrated by the master weaver and the whole process is explained from the cleaning, the spinning and dyeing of the different wools to the weaving itself. Adjacent to the workshop is a shop where you can buy items.
Overall very interesting and worth a visit.

What an amazing authentic method of a man weaving while using his own body weight for power and control. Hope someone of next generation will learn and use this method!!

If you are in Quito take time out to go north from the city and visit this workshop in Peguche, near Otavalos.
Expect a warm welcome to this traditional weaving centre where members of the family will talk through and demonstrate the skills that create the wonderful designs you will find in the very reasonably priced shop at the back of the premises.
Definitely a highlight of our visit to Ecuador.

Absolutely worth the trip! We happened to be the only ones in the workshop and the demonstration of how these works of art are created with precision and love is amazing. We purchased a tapestry and the most beautiful table runner that we will cherish forever! Definitely worth going to if you visit Otavalo or nearby!

I arranged with them to spend a day, weaving. It was all in Spanish and I had a really fantastic experience. Rafael worked calmly and patiently with me and I came home with a wonderful project. I joined them for lunch and felt welcomed. I highly recommend this for people with any interest in understanding this art.

We were out and about for the day and our driver stopped here. So thankful he did. We had a really interesting demonstration given by three generations of this family. Got to see how raw wool is made into yarn/thread for use with looms. Not only the process but the tools used for hundreds of years to do so. Also the different plants they use for the different natural colors. The youngest was using an old backstrap loom most of the time we were there. It was so amazing to see the work involved to do this by hand. It certainly makes you appreciate and understand the quality and caring that goes into a hand woven product. After the demonstration they let you browse through through their shop. There was no pressure whatsoever to purchase anything but I did as it was filled with the most beautiful items and it was nice to know that most everything (all the woven products) there were hand crafted at that same place. Considering the amount of time that goes into making these items they are really very reasonably priced. I actually purchased quite a bit as I saw some unique pieces that I did not see elsewhere - including the Otavalo market. It's nice to know that the money is going towards a family that it trying to keep the skill of making these items by hand alive. This was one of the more interesting and enjoyable places I visited during my six weeks in Otavalo.

Does one need an appointment to meet Miguel and family? We will not be on a group tour, only two of us
with our driver. Any days that they are not available?
