This place is now really in a very bad shape. It is being totally ignored. I cant imagine that this was once a great palace of historical importance.

Following my deep & abiding interest in the Indian history of the foreign rulers,i came across the figure of Begum Samru who played such a crucial rule during her times.I visited her `Palace`located in Bhagirath palace in Chandni chowk. The scene i saw where once a palace stood shocked me.The whole building is in a dilapidated state & where nobles once stood to get an audience with the Begum, stand dirty hawkers & tempos blocking the footpath & the whole building which is partially used by a bank! Here had stood this earliest colonial Heritage buildings with Greek arches & classical pillars.Parts of the building can come down at any time. This building was constructed by the Begum on a garden gifted by Akbar Shah the Moghul emperor for the efforts of the Begum in saving the sacking of Delhi by the amassed Sikh troops at Tees Hazri.
Along with Rani Laxmi bai of Jhansi Begum Samru occupies the minds of historians looking for great romantic female figures known for their feminism & spirit of adventure in the recent past of 17th & 18th century. She was very short Kashmiri nautch girl who seduced an European mercenary soldier Sombre & started living with him & converted to Roman Catholic Christianity from being a Muslim. She became the only Indian Christian ruler of India. She lead her army of troops along with her husband & won fame for her leadership & bravery. She also used her wiles to extricate the maximum power & riches in the uncertain period of those times.
She died a very rich woman as a ruler of the Sardana Meerut principality & even having a Samru Basilca church built on her name where Christians come to pray & ask her favors at Sardana! This Delhi palace was a reward for such exploits!
