Opposite the Chennai Port Trust Gate No.4, the Victory War Memorial, formerly called the Cupid's bow, is a memorial for the war dead in Chennai, India, It was initially constructed to commemorate the victory of the Allied Armies during World War I (1914–1918) and later became the victory war memorial for World War II (1939–1945). Post India's independence it has honored the fallen Indian soldiers.

The outer rooms and canopies have been named after WWI and II battlegrounds- Mesopotamia, Sudan etc.The main tower has pillars around it commemorating the wars India has fought after independence along with the names of the soldiers/martyrs.

The memorial has a somber and serene aura around it. It is almost on a traffic island. Visitors can walk around it. Access to the inner lawn and closer to the victory tower is restricted. It is maintained a small section of Indian army soldiers. The memorial is a must visit.

Today the 22nd of August 2019 happens to be Madras Day .Chennai derived from thevoriginal name Cheena Pattinum , was once officially known as
Madras during the British rule in India .

To commomorate this day, I thought it was fit to write about the War memorial in Chennai , located at the beginning of
Marina Beach Road , now formally rechristened as Kamarajar Salai after the Late first CM of Madtas
Shri Kamaraj .

Victory war memorial also known as Cupid's Bow was contructed to commomorate the victory of the allied forces during world war I, that happenned between 1912 to 1917.

It later also became the memorial for world war II as well and that took place between 1939 to 1945.

This addirion to the first , was primarily to honour the brave soldiers, who hailed from the Madras Presidency and who lost their lives .

In those days of the British rule .the Madras presidency also included , what is now known as Andhra pradesh state

Its another story that in later years to this memorial was added inscriptions of 1948 Kashmir Aggression, 1962 War with China and the Indo-Pakistan War .

To the East of this memorial lies the Chennai port extention and to the North is situated, The Fort St George- The seat of power for the British as well for the successive Goverment of Tamil.Nadu state .

The Island parade ground, owned by the army lies to the west and this ground is mainky used for conductiong many exhibitions.,
The main being the Pongal festival exhibition that is arranged each year by the Government .This exhibition attracts huge crowds from all over city and the state .

The Famous Marina Road or Kamarajar Salai , begins with this memorial.

It is siruated in the middle of the road that bifurcates into Flag staff Road that leads to Fort suburban Railway staion and the other called North Beach Road that leads to Fort St George and further on to North Madras or north Chennai .

Ths memorial is landscaped beautifully and well.maintained and in spite of heavy traffic its pretty quite inside .

This victory memorial.has become one of the main land mark in long and chequered history of Chennai which again was derived from.Chenna Pattinum during East India days that
carved out of Area under The Nawab of Arcot during the British era in India .

Tipico monumento di guerra che segna l'inizio della Marina, che si può percorrere a piedi. Non è particolarmente bello.

It humbles one to think that so many people gave up their lives to give us this lovely country to live in without the fear of being 'sat upon'. They died to make our lives better.

Victory War Memorial is located to the South of Fort St. George where the Flag Staff Road meets the Beach Road adjacent to the Island Ground. A solemn place in Memory Martyrsthose who laid down their lives in the WWI and WWII. Later the Names of those Martyrs who fought the 1948, 1962, 1965, 1971 and Kargil Wars were added'

There is a Large Tri-colour Flag of India which inspires the visitors to salute the Armed Forces and Para Military Forces for their selfless service to the Nation. The intensity is at the peak when you stand at the Tower for a few minutes with moist eyes.

The well laid out garden provide a little relief to the sombre mood.

As a British visitor it was very moving to come across this impressive monument just by chance. My visit was during November, the month when the British remember their dead and of course it's worth remembering that 3 out of 4 'British' troops who fought the Japanese in WWII were actually Indian, thats in addition to those Indians who fought in Europe, North Africa and elsewhere
