You won't get to shop what it is famous for i.e. gadgets that are imported or through customs. instead, you will find tiny boxy shops selling cheap Chinese replicas etc.

However, it is fun to walk by the market due to A. See old architecture around and B. Fun experience since such small, old and famous markets will always have more to connect with city's culture, people, history and local old food joints (shabby though sometimes).

Burma Bazar once used to be the place for people who are looking for cheap electronic items and imported perfumes, leather etc etc. You will get everything here. Located closed to Paris corner and parallel to the beach station rail line, it has many small shops all filled with anything you can imagine under the sun. One has to know how to bargain and get goods here. If you are a person who is not familiar with the place you will surely get cheated. Information spreads so fast that the shop owners know what you are looking for.. hand in glove... There is no guarantee that the products you buy, especially electronics will work or not. That is the price we pay for looking for cheap goods. There is also no guarantee that it is the brand you are looking for. Maybe fake too.... Just for fun, being an old landmark of Chennai one can visit this place. Place gains importance more from a heritage aspect and nothing more.

When there was turmoil in Burma (presently Myanmar) the refugees were given a place in chennai and that ultimately became Burma Bazar. in the 1980s this big row of shops was an attraction of Chennai with imported goods. Now that India has developed a lot, most of these products are available freely in India. People no longer go to Burma Bazar to buy things. But still this is a lively place to visit and mingle with the shoppers as this is an historical place for Chennai. A visit to Chennai has to include a visit to Burma Bazar

Don’t go too early as I did on Sunday morning. The shops open later closer to noon but did enjoy the local company around the tea and dosa stalls. Don’t miss the 1850s architecture is the buildings across the road. Magnificent examples of the Indian style arches, windows and porches in the SBI heritage building and few other buildings down the street. The area is an attraction in itself, so do visit with an open mind, exploring heart and good shoes. Take the train back as well...

In my recent experience this place become full of DVD shops. Although you get all new releases and adult contents, there are few places where you will get the world cinema which you can not even see in a movie theatre. Unless you go with someone who know the place, you need to be careful with price. Bargain hard and do not give in. Going there itself an experience, so give enough time to go around.

It has many shops from where you can buy imported goods at affordable cost. Beware of the fake sellers and also check twice before buying an item. Some of the sellers are really genuine and its worth trying your shopping experience at this bazaar

In those days when goods from abroad were a unique thing, which we get to see only when some of our benevolent relatives come from abroad land into India, Burma bazaar was the gateway to such goods sitting in our dear chennai. You get all kinds of imported goods. one should have the patience to go to many shops, discover the price, negotiate as if there is no tomorrow and lo and behold you would end up something that is good. I am sure, even today the same holds good as still we get goods only from burma bazaar much before it hits the normal market area.

This is a wonderful shopping experience - it tests your ability to pick out the best stuff (so that the shopkeeper does not load you with a bad piece) ability to negotiate. Sometimes you will land up with some fantastic deals. I do not shop much today and hence my awareness about today is very low, but we did one shopping ' an old time radio' for my mother and we could get a wonderful piece.

All our formative office years were spent in Parry's corner and one part also had gone to Burma Bazaar, this place stands dear in my heart.
