This park is a great escape to nature in the Huntsville area. It is relatively easy to get to and the parking is plentiful. The trails are well marked and an easy walk. The park has rentable cabins. We did not use them but they look like a fun way to camp in the park.

We visited while in Huntsville. We're charged $5 a person to get in the park which seamed high due to the fact our Alabama taxes paid for it. It is a pretty wooded area with some overlooks that were not very impressive. We live in the mountains of north Alabama and the view are much more impressive within 5 miles of our home. Restroom facilities are barley above outhouse standards. We have heard how beautiful it was on the news and thought we would check it out. Plenty of hiking trails there but the unbeaten trails are the best.

We hike a lot and love Monte Sano due to well kept trails. We also love to take the kids and let them play at the park.

Stayed there three days and two nights. Camp ground was well shaded and had plenty of room for 30 foot camper. Electric work inside park limited spaced and swer hook up. Bathhouse was a little far but okay. Recent rain closed mountain bike trails for a day. When they opened. They were in good shape and well marked. Access road to state park was a residential street with no shoulders. Bigger RV might find it challenging. Japanese garden was well kept and nice. It was a nice park but we enjoyed Oak Mountain SP more.

Gorgeous drive to the top! We are not hikers but there were plenty of opportunities to do that if you wish. Also available are beautiful little stone cabins you can rent. View from the top is not to be missed!

We like cabin camping and this park suited us very well. The cabin we had was very cozy at 600 sq. Ft. In that space it is nicely arranged with two beds, a small sofa, a TV, and a table with four chairs. The kitchen is small and narrow. It has a small fridge, a four burner range, a microwave, a toaster and a coffee maker. There is a minimal number of utensils and pots and pans for cooking needs. The best part of the cabin is the enclosed porch with two chairs and a small table and a great view if not foggy.
The location is convenient o places to visit in Huntsville.

What a nice place. Beautiful mountain top park. Especially liked the Japanese Garden, which is very serene. We spent quite a bit of time there as it was so interesting. We also happened to meet the designer/builder of the garden, Robert Black, and he gave us a tour of the history and the plants in the garden. Wonderful!

We just spent four nights in a cabin at Monte Sano State Park. If you are looking for clean and sparkly, this is not the stay for you. I understand these are CCC cabins, built in the 1930’s. I love that about them. But, I’m not sure they have been cleaned or upgraded in any way since then. I spent our first morning by toting pans of water onto the screen porch and sweeping out the layers of dirt and dust. I wanted to take a hose to the inside, also. I would not shower in the tiny tile shower without my flip-flops on. The lighting is very dim; it’s probably for a reason. The electrical outlets are ancient, the vent in the bathroom is hanging loose, the curtains have holes in them, and the few amenities are of the lowest possible quality.
The park itself was very enjoyable with a myriad of trails of all levels.
The staff is friendly, but do not present as professional. Maybe Alabama has cut its parks budget, if so, shame on them.

What is a good place to celebrate a Thanksgiving dinner?

It would be nice to get cabins close to each other if you have 8-10 people and maybe rig up a table in one of them large enough to have the "big dinner".
The Pavilions for picnics are too open for a holiday family gathering.
How much are the cabins
DonDe35801

$113 a night

We had our camper when at Monte Sano but had cousins staying in one of the cabins at the same time. Seems like it was #15? It was one of 2 cabins that were "dog friendly". Seems like any of them would have been fine. Real cozy rustic cabin.
Are there a lot of snakes out there ??

I’ve walked right under a rattle snake while hiking there a year ago. I’ve seen small ones ( not rattle snakes- that one was my first) on rare occasions. I’ve been hiking that mountain for 30 years. They’re there. But normally wanna stay away from you as much as you wanna stay away from them. :)

Are there any trails that are handicapped accesible (wheelchair)? Can I use a medical scooter here?

Actually I dont think so, but u could call and ask because I haven't been on all the trials. The ones I was on seem rather difficult. I would like to recommend Aldridge Creek Greenway, located off Bailey cove Road, South. I think address is 1100 Mountain Gap Road, free parking the Park, then cross over the bridge and walk down the sidewalk to,the creek. This greenway goes for miles and has side walks on both sides of the creek. Also I would recommend Hayes Nature Trial in Owens Cross Roads. Free parking and has flat trials, a beautiful lake and much easier to navigate: also has some trials that have sidewalks.

Unsure, but the staff is very friendly; if desire later check out simply ask upon checking in - our request for an extra hour has never been turned down at any state park/camping venue.

Planning on going there with 40 ft diesel motorhome. We have large site reserved but wondering if any problems getting to campground......as far as height clearances (limbs) on Bankhead Pky or into campground itself?

Big Spring Park is a nice place to visit. Short walk, water, all kinds of birds - ducks, geese, etc. There are cute restaurants near there too. Also the Von Braun Center is located adjacent to the park if you want to take in a concert or show of some kind. If you like art, I would take a stroll through Lowe Mill. Also go to Blue Plate Cafe. It's a must!

Playground and picnic area have the most sunlight. Playground is in a large open field where you can get lots of sun. As for hiking, South Plateau Loop trail is the most sunny but all of our trails are wooded and have shade.

As long as your pups are on a leash, they are welcome on the trails and around the park.
