The Refugio is a special and spectacular place. My husband and I stumbled upon it during our hike from Montezuma to El Churro. Entranced, we came back the next day to spend time at the refuge. I’m so grateful we did! The refuge is kept as pristine as possible through volunteers working hard to clean up garbage washed ashore. Because it’s a bit of a walk, the beaches aren’t as crowded. You’ll find more local families having a day or weekend outing. And the jungle river walk? Absolutely stunning! The areas are kept as clean and natural as possible. My biggest intrigue was the baby turtle releasing, daily around 4pm. An absolute must to see and experience to fully appreciate what the volunteers do. I fully recommend visiting the Romelia Mixed Wildlife Refuge, just remember to Leave No Trace❤️

An excellent beach to relax, in addition to the locals, they love music, so when I arrived there was a boy playing live music.
Very safe..!!!

I’m not sure I really saw much of this area, nor am I sure it’s really accessible. But here’s what I know:
To access you just drive from town along the beach road towards Ylang Ylang until the last parking spot where there’s a “no motor vehicles beyond” sign. From there you walk east down the beach and find a path that crosses the rocks to a small beach. There you’ll find tide pools and a small creek. You’ll also notice the whole character of the beach changes as it’s untrammelled. From there you can continue intermittently using a path to 2 other beaches, the last and largest and most beautiful is playa grande. There are a few buildings for the preserve that are barely visible and I don’t think they offer much or anything for passers by. I just enjoyed the beautiful beach and preserved foliage. It’s very beautiful and much different from the beaches with roads along them. Highly recommend for an early morning walk and wildlife watch. It gets quite hot to walk during the day, so beware.

We spent a couple o& hours at this park and it is beautiful. The park along with all its trees and foliage runs right next to the sea, so the contrasting colours of green and blue
are awesome. It is one of the most beatiful parks in the world I have ever seen.

I've visited Montezuma at least once each year since 1994. While I'm there I try to go to Playa Grande in Romelia every single day. Even if I'm doing something else wonderful, I have to get over my feelings about missing a day at Playa Grande. Bring water, something to snack on, a hammock, your boogie board if you have one, and a friendly attitude. The natural scene holds never-ending fascination. Do not bring your phone, wallet or valuables (unless you're with people who can watch them for you).

I booked a month of Volunteering in Romelia. At first I didn´t know what to expect. It turned out to be the best month of my life so far. Working on a lonely beach in a super relaxed atmosphere, taking care of baby turtles. If you want to calm down and find your inner peace, this is the place for you. I can only recommend it to anybody who wants to go there. You will understand what Pura Vida means.

I booked a month in the volunteer Program of the Refugio and it was such a great experience that I would recommend it to everyone how want to spend some time out in nature and have a great time working with the turtles!
The team of the Refugio is awesome and they now what they are doing. After working hours we all just enjoy each other's company and "hang" around in the hammocks.
I enjoy looking back to a great month, with awesome people and the nature in front of the door!
Thank you Refugio for such a great month in Costa Rica!!!

Hello, I saw your post on trip advisor from a few years a go about volunteering at Romelia, Costa Rica . I am planning to goi there, but cannot figure out what are the cost of volunteering. How much did it cost per week to participate in the program.
Thanks a lot,
Yuriy

What was the best way to get from San Jose to Montezuma? There are directions on the website but would like to hear opinions on which one. I am traveling it alone and that's the only part I'm worried about with very limited Spanish.

Hi - I'm interested in volunteering and have send several request via the contact us link on the website, but no response. Can someone provide a way to contact Refugio Nacional....?
Thank you!

Hi. I contacted them via Facebook and they directed me to CRLA, a language training place in Costa Rica. They require a multiple week language course before helping. You can search CRLA in Costa Rica as tripadvisor won't allow me to add a link.
I don't have enough time so I looked at GoAbroad and received this:
Thank you for your inquiry about our Costa Rica turtle project. This is a wonderful project helping to save Costa Rica's delicate turtle population. To find out more, check out our project page here:(you can do a search for GoAbroad)
I'm considering volunteering in September or sooner. Good luck. Please let me know if you learn more!
Dave
