This little museum is expertly curated. Not only is it beautiful, but the very short films (1-3 minutes each), are excellent. Nice gift shop with helpful staff. This should be your first stop in Tmaru.

We had an incredible tour of this extraordinary gem. The centre is brilliantly set up to inform all ages about Maori rock art and the life and culture it came out of. This place is a treasure and should be on everyones itinerary.

Personal tour of the Centre & then the Opihi Rock Art site was excellent. Well worth it. Learned so much about Maori culture & early history. Rachel Solomon was a fantastic guide.

This was an unexpectred find. We did not know anything about it and looked to things to see en route to Lake Taupo. Timaru came up with this. We enjoyed leaning about the various paintings that are found and some of their history and how it fits into the overall culture in this area. The museum is small, in the I-SITE in an old train depot area by the harbor, but each display seemed to trap us and we spent more than an hour there, had ot leave since they were closing.

Our tour guide took us through the museum explaining the various aspects of the Maori rock art. Then we were given time to look at the displays and short films that were available. Next we followed her to the Maori rock art site. We walked down a steep slope to the site. It was very interesting and our guide had lots of stories to tell us. Then it was a really long climb back up to the carpark. The walk round trip was 1.4 km.

This was a fascinating museum with lots of interactive information. Usually, it is closed on Sundays but the cruise ship got them to open and I am sure it was worthwhile.
Right in the town with several bars around as well as a craft market.

We arrived at 2 pm. We're didn't realize it closed at 3. That was the right amount of time to walk thru & listen to videos about the Maori rock art and some of their history. It was $20/pp

Ohne die originalen Zeichnungen gesehen zu haben, gibt das Museum auf vielfältige Weise multimedial Einblicke über Herkunft, Art und Weise, Bedeutung und Verbreitung der Māori Rock Art.

Hi. Can anyone please tell me how long I would need to allow to see this. Regards in advance.
Te Ana
Timaru
Kia ora and thanks for your inquiry. A guided tour of Te Ana maori Rock Art Centre takes around an hour, however you are welcome to stay as long as like. We are open from 10am to 3pm. You would need to allow 3 hours to take the guided tour of the rock art sites at Opihi - this includes a one hour guided tour of the Centre, which provides an excellent orientation for the site tour. The Centre + Caves activity runs daily at 2pm and you need to have your own transport (you follow our guide to the site).
