Pretoria Station was designed by the same Herbert Baker, who is famous for his Union Building. However, the station building was Baker's first order and a successful station project, he paved his way to his main business. The building built in 1910 looks quite decent, especially since it was reconstructed after a fire caused by passengers due to flight delays. Trains in South Africa did not run better, and the roof along with the waiting room burned out... The entrance to the high-speed train line is separate. A very modern platform, an intuitive ticket vending machine.

The station is in a crowded and run-down part of town although the station building is in good condition. Taking the Gautrain to the station in a pleasure but driving there is challenging when looking for parking. It is very crowded during peak commuting hours and when we were there a group of people were harassed in the parking area. In general it was clean and well kept.

I decided to take a solo visit to the station. To see, if the place has gone from good to worse or from good to better. Especially the garden and the buildings and other structure. After moving around the place, I noticed that the 2010 standard has been maintained and even improved. there are new shops, food outlets such as Mr pie, Mac Donald's and Dibonairs Pizza, as well as few others.
There is also meter taxis and three wheel scooters, minibus taxis are also a stone throw away from the main station. SAPS-Railway unit is situated next to the station. Old Victoria hotel is just across the road..The place is clean and there is visible security

Unless you are taking a train, there is no obvious reason to enter this otherwise attractive historical structure. For a bathroom break, a better bet is the McDonald’s [1928] nearby which also offers free Wi-Fi. A great Kodak moment but not much else. I would not be inclined to be in the area when the sun goes down.

This station has done some revamps including restaurants like Mcdonald's, Debonaires, etc. Now this place looks better that it was before.
Althogh these renovations have took place but still the bus/couch terminal is left unattended. it has no adequate shelter for passengers waiting to board the buses. The City of Tshwane should look in this.

Once you have looked at the outside there is not much to do but you can catch the Gautrain from here to Hatfield in Pretoria where there are shops and the University of Pretora or to Johannesburg and the airport

Built in 1910 was first Southern African State Building designed by Sir Herbert Baker and the exterior still impressive.
There used to be an old steam locomotive displayed in the entrance portal.
Toilets famous as point where Winston Churchill used them to escape his Boer captors.
Startting point for the well known luxurious Blue Train to Cape Town.
Limited short term motor car parking
Station center point for all passenger rail service North south east and west and is next doors to
modern hi speed GAUTRAIN station with its more than adequate secure parking.
Nearby to Pretoria's Burger Park and various Museums and by taxi to Melrose House or Kruger House or famous Church Square.
Tourists should be careful for bagsnatching and at worst muggings as the security is not as excellent as that at the Gautrain Hi Speed train station .
The gardens in front the station a relic of more genteel days and because of the now rough area Tourists should be careful here.
Worth a visit for its architecture and historic roots and from here other sites in close proximity.
