Overrated. Nothing much to see in my opinion .
If you do drive on the garden route, the last stop, Tsuskikamma was ok, or the best on the route
If you have limited time , I would skip this.
Rather spend the time in cape town, or kruger, or another country

We drove the garden route recently, travelling to Hermanus, Knysna Sedgefield and Mossel Bay. The route is spectacular in parts and the roads are excellent. The same cannot be said of some of the South African driving!

Have to do Robberg, Shark dive, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Wilderness.. do NOT waste your time and go all the way to Port Elizabeth. Jeffrey’s was overrated too but we went when the waves were meh (May). Obvi check the wave report but not impressed. Port Elizabeth is dangerous and not exciting. Don’t listen to the internet, Storms River is the official END of the Garden Route, not Port Elizabeth.

Cape Convoy (Convoy Tours): Mr. Robert Salmon
4 days in Cape Town and 6 days dedicated to the Garden Route tour is what I had planned in the month of May, which turned out to be the perfect decision in terms of covering all the topmost attractions. I booked a private affordable tour through Cape Convoy (Convoy Tours). The owner, Robert Salmon, who was also our tour guide for the Garden Route, left no stone unturned to make this trip a memorable one. I would like to mention that, the real fun in coming close to nature and the wild animals are definitely not in any zoo or private safaris. I personally do not derive any pleasure from watching animals in captivity. Garden Route in South Africa is one such tour where you can experience wildlife in its natural habitat, and indulge in adventure sports as well.
The topmost attractions covered on the Garden Route were:-
- Hermanus: Shark cage diving
- Plettenberg Bay: Monkey Land and Skydive
-Tenikwa wildlife and rehabilitation Centre
-Ostrich Farm
-Cango Caves
-Cango Wildlife Ranch
- Robberg Nature Reserve

This year 2019 ,my family decided on the garden route road trip from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. We flew in to PE airport (small and quaint-almost forgotten by time)
We checked in to the Radisson Blu in Summerstrand,PE
A lovely hotel ,with comfortable rooms and great views.Water restrictions apply here, teaching everyone to be more waterwise. Rooms were very modern and had all the amenities.
Our next stop was Kwantu game reserve.
The drive is beautiful, the area is in much need of rain.
Kwantu welcome by Tendai was amazing. The Elephant Ridge rooms, placed alongside the big cat sanctuary, made you truly feel like you were sleeping with the lions.
At Kwantu ,all meals were provided, including high tea . All mini bar snacks and drinks were free.
The game drives with very pleasant rangers, was excellent and informative.
We saw lion, elephant, all types of buck, zebra, giraffe and rhino.
Rooms were spacious but need some attention to drains. There were no safes and no plug points next to the beds.
Pezula in Knysna
A true gem. The rooms are definitely 5 star, well kept and maintained. Decor is classic ,with fireplace. Breakfast is excellent, with a great view over Knysna.Pezula is on the top of the hill (great views and breathtaking sunsets)but a bit of a drive from the waterfront and Thesen Island.
In room dining food was not too great.
We passed through Hartenbos,Mossel bay and Swellendham . All gorgeous towns . Hartenbos was extremely busy, and traffic between it and Mosselbay was at a standstill.
The Wilderness ,in fact most of the drive is rich in stunning scenery and views. There are many opportunities to take “postcard” worthy pics.
Fancourt in George was our next stay.
The rooms are comfortable but a bit of an anti climax after Pezula. The resort was very busy due to the festive season. Lots of activities for little kids through to teens.
Arabella in Hermanus is our current stay.
Having had coffee a few years ago on a passing drive,I had always wished to return and stay over. Greatly disappointed. The reception is very beautiful. The rooms are very very dated in color and furniture. Housekeeping does not clean too well(no vacuum)bathroom just wiped.
maybe its too busy over the festive holidays.
The shower has no place to put your shampoos etc.
The spa is a must.
The pool area outdoors reminds me a but of the lost city at suncity with the rock feature. Breakfast has everything you could possibly want to eat, including a halaal section.
Croissants tasted a little stale.
Will post reviews of our next stay-Cape Town.

I've written a review a while back about the beautiful garden route but would like to mention a hidden gem along the way for tourists. Botlierskop! If you haven't got time to go north to the Kruger National Park and you'd like to experience a beautiful, compact, luxury safari experience in the Cape, make a point of stopping by at the small game farm, Botlierskop (between Mossel Bay and George) for an informative game drive to see the Big Five (except leopard), various buck and antelopes, giraffe, rhinos, lions, elephants and the rare black impalas. This exceptionally well run establishment offers, top class food at their restaurants, infinity pools, indoor and outdoor fires, luxury comfortable accommodation, a spa, horseback riding, safari game drives, etc. A night or two is totally worth it!

We are travelling the garden route form cape town to port elizabeth in Jan next year, after spending 7 days in cape town. we have 8 nights, not keen on Outshorn as have a fear of ostriches!! hate the things lol. Is it still worth going this route if not seeing the ostriches? also where and how many nights along the route to stay at?

Hola a todos. Estoy planificando unas vacaciones en Sudáfrica para la segunda quincena de julio de este año (2019). Como es época invernal, quisiera saber si conviene recorrer la ruita de los jardines, cuántos días dedicarle y los principales atractivos. Gracias. Carina.

Cape Town and Garden Route - is Self Drive recommended and Safe.
Hi, we are planning to go to SAF in May and intend to spend 3-4 days in Cape Town followed by 5 day through Garden Route before me move to JoBerg from George.
I am planning to stay at George/Oudtshroon and Plettenberg Bay.
Is Self drive safe and recommended if we are 2 adults and 1 kid of 5 yrs. If yes which is the preferred rental company?

Hi this is Clifford......I wrote the original review on Speed Traps in the Cape. I would like to add the latest development.
Be very careful......Hertz rent a car have now taken two Admin fees from my credit card WITHOUT any notification. When I called to discuss, I was told me they could take any payment at anytime without notification. This could go on indefinitely...6 months, a year ,two years!!!
Hertz said there was nothing they could do about continuing speed fines coming in.
Remember I was there in February and have just received another speeding fine I know nothing about, and have no recourse!!!
A total disgrace!
Any advice please!?

Lucky for us our car had speed traps installed so it told us when they come up. But surely they cannot take money straight off your credit card I suggest you speak to hertz car rentals head office and ask them were you was when it was taken and you want proof of this fine and the time this happened.

I have only 3 days to do the garden route is that enough? Where best places to stay on the route ? What the best trusted car hire company to rent a car from CT?
Thanks :)

Avis tend to be the cheapest ones in this part of the world.
If you only have 3 days then I would simply stick to Cape Town as there is enough to see there to fill in a few weeks!

Is it better to have a guided tour along the Garden Route or self drive ? What's the best time of year ?

I would highly recommend a self-drive, especially that you can rent a car for $20USD per day.
We did it in the end of July and had a great time and decent weather.
