We went for one of the sunset sessions. Great food, great wine, but the music was quite dissapointing. It was so soft and we really like the musician so we would have liked to enjoy the music with the sunset.

I always take all my overseas family to Alto. We love the wine and biltong pairing. This time around Harold was our waiter and he was phenomenal. You will make a mistake to come to Cape Town and not visit Alto.

We had high expectations for the Friday evening Sundowner (concert on the terrace). Wonderful view with a nice performance by a singer-songwriter. The audience did not pay much attention to the performance. He deserved better. View was fantastic, garden and restaurant are very beautiful. Cheese board was tasty. Bread could be better. Nice white wine, and two red ones (not our taste). But definitely worth it.
Low prices for the wines.

We visited Alto as part of a U3a group of 40-50 persons on a wine and dine outing. An excellent setting . Parking was adequate. This was undoubtedly one of the best we have attended.
Alto rose magnificently to a challenging situation. The red wines, as expected, were excellent and served chilled on a hot day and well presented by a knowledgeable Hospitality Manager. We gave all the wines above average ratings. My wife and I shared a very good medium rare steak and a correctly prepared Caesar salad ( the poached egg was also soft). The service could not be faulted. We would happily visit again.

We had a wonderful time at the Estate. Did the smoked cheese n wine tasting which was very enjoyable. Decided to stay for lunch. That was the best decision of the day. We had the Alto Burger - cooked to perfection with crispy chunky fries , and the grilled linefish which was out of this world. If you are very hungry you may have to ask for a few more of the devine new potatoes or order an additional side of fries. The linefish went down with a bottle of their Rose and the Estate Red worked perfectly with the Burger. We will definitly be back.

This is such a gem of wine estate. Well worth a visit! Staff, food and wine - excellent.
A short tour by an amazing lady followed by a lovely lazy lunch with some lovely wines. Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Also what was really nice idea is you can choose 50/50 portions to taste more of the delicious food.

This was our third stop on our Vine Hopper tour. It was rainy outside, but warm and inviting inside. So nice to have tables reserved for the Vine Hopper guests. I’m sure there would have been a beautiful view if it weren’t cloudy.
We liked the Estate Blend and the MPS. They offer a biltong and wine pairing here. We didn’t try it but others with us did and they really liked it. There was a ceramic smoker outside which started a great conversation about the Big Green Egg that we love to use and our new friends from Switzerland love it too.

Recap >> Lovely settings within airy valley although the indoor wine tasting rooms does not pay tribute to the quality of wines speaking of which, you start questioning yourself about all other wine farms visited before. Besides unquestionable wine quality, a few dets contrasting brand image and affecting customer exp.
Story >> We touched base first place in our highly planned and sought-after two-week wine tasting road-map around Stellenboch area. The winter blanket in Western Cape has not been impressive so far yet the cold breeze and rain can play havoc in the wine-lands / Stellenbosch hills. When arrived at Alto found lovely sofas in the garden which could not take advantage of due to sudden showers and icy breeze in fact. When walked in the tasting room felt like more a boutique han a company reaching Milestone with 100th Consecutive Wine Vintage. Despite the boxy wine tasting room we had the opportunity to appreciate the comfortable sofas right in front of generous fireplace, it took us an hour to find some room in there and take a seat though. The tasting room comes with cold interiors and layered with uncomfortable squared chairs and tables spread in less than 50 sqm circa.
Back to our tasting exp we went with two food pairing tastings which include a selection of 5 reds and different types of biltong. Good for us we were welcomed to swap some undesired cultivars and pick our favorites. High marks to quality of wine with the exception of their dessert / porto wine. Food pairing was great. Ultimately we like / love / desire almost any Alto and would recommend the wine tasting definitely although can’t help but suggesting to the Alto management to improve the indoor area, the service, the ladies & gents. Alto red wines can be appreciated more in cold & misty winter days when you also seek for some all-comprehensive-comfort in an wine tasting.
Last but not least, we left premises only after having secured in our rental car trunk a few boxes of Alto wines ie. invested a few thousands in wine bottles & tastings which were not waived despite the purchase of wine btw. Almost any wine farms do it. A few days after found at the wine cellar in a supermarket same type of wine cheaper than at the factory.
That’s not really fair we believe. I would accept the same price but paying more at the factory was really disappointing…

One of the less visited wineries on the Helderberg side but don’t miss it. Only 5 wines but really very good and Biltong pairing option also. Highlight is a 2012 ‘port’ which is one of the finest we’ve tasted. Grab a bottle while there’s a few left. Served by lovely guy James.
