The place is located in the center, a stone's throw from Corrientes Avenue and one block from Florida Street. The Milonga is organized by Omar Viola and attracts an international audience. The night we were there we were able to dance tango to live music and then watch two pairs of Tango Show shows. I recommend always reserving a table if you don't want to risk standing.

We wanted to explore Argentine Tango culture some how, some way, and stumbled across this place which turned out to be perfect. Although we considered the bigger shows designed for tourists we looked instead for something more local and found it here.

Just a entrance at the street, walk back and it opens up to a medium sized dance floor surrounded by tables and chairs. We arrived at 9 and there was already a class going on. We watched from a table as the dance lesson finished and then signed up for the next one.

Our lesson started at 9:30 and beginners, like us were broken out from more experienced dancers. While they learned advanced techniques, we learned the basic step. The lessons were partly in English and partly in Spanish but it was easy to follow along in either language.

After the lesson we stayed and around 11:00 the whole place was filled with locals who had reserved tables, and it seemed that some even had reserved drinks as they were served without giving an order. Many seemed like long time regulars which may explain the drinks. All the closest tables to the dance floor were reserved but we could still see the dancers from a back table. The regulars came prepared carrying in dancing shoes and hand fans used to to cool off with after dancing.

Drinks included wine, beer, and a limited selection of well drinks. We got a bottle of Champagne and two bottles of water for A$900 or US$12 (including tip).

It was great to see the whole spectacle of Malonga culture play out before our eyes. The clothes, the characters, and of course the dancing were awesome to take in. It wasn't a show, and we were kind of being taking advantage of the situation by gawking at it instead of fully participating, we did dance a little, but still it was awesome to feel like we are seeing the real deal.

I was amazed. We had an unbelievable experience there. I'd immediately go there again and I'd take everyone with me who would be awake in the middle of the night. JUST GO! Don't think twice.

I have visited Parakultural in several ocasions but this review is on my visit of Monday 4th of March 2019. The evening started with the beginners class by Alberto Catala (her partner Mirta did not come). Alberto's style was warm, technique was proper and the overall content gave the right foundations for development of Tango the right way. In contrast the following class by Gabriel Angio' and Natalia Games was rather useless. The interaction by both teachers was cold if not arrogant. The figures were demonstrated but not tought, which made the steps appear more difficult than they were (perhaps for atracting students to private clases?). The class was the typical "look how nice I dance but you are on your own". Gabriel even stated unapologetically after showing his skill "ahora arreglense como puedan" (loosely translated as "now learn it as you can"). This experience demonstrates again that good dancing alone does not makes a good Tango teacher.
After the classes, the milonga started in the nice setting of the Canning ballroom. The music seleccion was very good but the space was soon overcrowded and very hot with only half AC on and fans off. The level of dancers was averrage for Buenos Aires and the high number of foreign turists schifted a bit the typical ambience of a Milonga. After midnight Nestror Azurin and Paula Pandol gave us an excellent performance of Tango, Vals and Milonga. Then, the Orchestra Sans Sauci demonstrated why it is among the best Tango orchestras anywhere. Bandoneons were great but the violin particularly impressed me even more. They permormed nice Tangos and some classical music in Tango style, all with precision and good taste. My favorite event of the night was the following dancing show by Ricardo Calvo and Sandra Messina. Their technique was impecable and their happiness for dancing contagious. With their rythm, technique and energy without acrobatics, they danced as some day I would like to dance.
In summary, Parakultural yesterday provided a solid begginer's class, a bad intermediate class, two outstanding dancing shows and excellent live orchestra, in an overcrowded and hot atmosphere not best representing the typical Milonga of Buenos Aires.

Parakultural is for very young people. It is not representative of real tango, as there are no rules, no codes. BTW, they like your much hated $ € and Yen, but that is all.

I love going Fridays. You can see amazing dancers like Blas Catrenau. The team of waitresses is wonderful. I miss it very much when I am away from Buenos Aires. I am looking forward to come back.

Parakulture and Salón Canning are one in the same place. There is only a small sign above the doorway indicating where this dance hall is. We walked by it several times before figuring it out. We tried by street address, but even that is missing at the doorway. We headed there after dinner last night, and arrived about 11:00 p.m. There is a dance floor surrounded by tables set for 2-4 people. The tables are numbered, and I am pretty sure that there are about 70 tables. Last night was Wednesday night, and the room was about half full. The majority of the people were in their 50’s to 60’s, with a few grandmothers, and a smattering of younger people as well. The women are dressed up, with their tango shoes on, and the men are in long pants, closed shoes, collared shirts, and even suit jackets in some cases. The dancers chose their partner with signals that are quitters e discreet, and they dance with that partner for three dances. Then the music changes (50’s rock and roll while we were there), and everybody takes a break, cools down, and has a drink. One or one and a half songs later, the tango music starts up again, and the dance floor fills. There is a bar with table service. Wine, beer, pop, and water are offered at reasonable prices. Pizza, vegetable or tuna tarts, tostadas, sandwiches are available as well. We paid 140 pesos each to get in, and 220 pesos for a bottle of wine. That is about $35.00 CDN. Fair price for some wonderful entertainment. This is not a tango show, but a true neighbourhood dance hall where the locals come to dance. This is not a place where men and women come to look for a partner, but to simply dance for the enjoyment of the tango.
If you are near here, and want to experience real Argentinian culture, this is a must see!
