We hired a car and drove to the north western tip of the island. Be warned- the roads are poor with lots of potholes. The tsunami washed away the resorts on this part of Tongatapu and with it, the end of the roads. There are no signs to indicate that the road simply falls away, so be careful. Once there, the beach is lovely and good for a shallow swim. Sad to see where the resorts were.

Beautiful beach, we swam, snorkeled and had the place virtually to ourselves. Very sad to see the destruction left by the 2022 tsunami.

This is one of the few places along the exposed coast were you can surf or swim out to the drop off safely. You can see whales from shore in whale season especially in the evening. If you swim out to the deep you can hear them. This is a great sunset location. Not alot of shade about so bring a shelter or sunblock if your here in the middle of the day. Swimming on the inside of the reef is mostly safe.
Me gusta las ballenas y puesto do sol en este lugar.
Y la agua fuera del reef donde la agua es mas clara.

We stayed at Heilala Holiday Lodge with this beautiful beach as frontage. There was lovely white sand to sit on and some coral and fish to enjoy when snorkeling. There were some trees to get a bit of shelter from the sun. There were several resorts that you could access from the beach to enjoy a meal. We were able to view whales some of the times we were there.

This beach has white sand and a lagoon which is very safe and good fish snorkelling....some coral. There is a good surf break at the edge of the reef and whales have been swimming past in the hour hefore sunset too. Great sunsets.

Our family of 6 were taken to this beach at the recommendation of our taxi driver after we told him that we wanted to do some snorkelling. We were able to see an array of coral and plenty of fish in the calm waters. It is a great location for young swimmers because of the safe protected waters. Bring your own snorkel gear because there was no-one I saw hiring equipment in the vicinity.

This beach is tucked in out of the South East trade winds and if you have your goggles the fish life is excellent. There is a sort of marine reserve at the end of the beach just to the right of the road access. The fish life was impressive with an amazing variety of fish. We went back twice as it was the best and cleanest beach we found around the island. The expats who run the local resorts clean the beach which is fantastic.

We stopped here on a car trip around the island. Very pretty much more attractive than on the other side of the island!
The tide was getting low so we walking on our hands when snorkeling but it was enough to see some fish...sadly a lot of the coral is dead but here were enough fish to keep our interest. Loved the little clown fish hiding in the anemone 😍
We had lunch at Holty’s Hideaway which I also can thoroughly recommend.

We tried a bit of surfing but the surf wasn't really big enough to avoid being scraped on the coral. But snorkelling is good and if you're brave go through the surf and behind it you will get better coral gardens. Also i thought head to the northern end of the peninsula was better too- that end is the marine reserve although the coral is still dead.

We took a taxi which cost us $40 for 4 of us. For those who don't like getting in the water, just do it. It is cold when you first get in but worth it once you start snorkeling. Sadly most of the coral is dead. (A chemical in sunscreen may be contributing to the destruction of the coral reefs as swimmers trying to protect their skin venture near reefs, according to new research.) We did see some beautiful coral but really had to look for it. (Poorly informed and negligent divers also harm corals by touching and standing on them. Even if a coral is not visibly harmed, human touch can make them more vulnerable to death and disease.) Please be kind to the coral!!! Don't touch!
We saw lots of fish even clown fish playing in an anenome.
Ate at Holty's Hideaway. I had the burger but my friend had something that looked much better.
Then caught a bus at the top of the road for $3 back to Nuke alofa. Fun!

We are arriving on a carnival cruise and would like to visit Ha’atafu beach. What is the best way to get there and back. I have had a bad experience with taxis not coming back. Also do any of the hotels offer day passes

Hi there
The beach looks amazing. Is there public transport from Vuna Road that goes to the beach? Or what is the best way to travel there if you dont have a rental car
Cheers

There is a bus 6 days a week. Goes both ways. Get precise directions before you go. The bus will go straight along the main road and then you will need to walk a little. Times for buses are variable I suspect. Many of the tourist resorts are around here and every one was very helpful. Best to ask a local the day before
