To call this a museum does a disservice to any other museum in the world. There is a snake exhibit where pythons and black mambas rest in small, dirty cages. Worse are the ones where large crocodiles rest in a cage that’s so small it seems cruel.
The actual “museum” are just a handful of displays that show tools, pottery and other instruments of the indigenous people with very little back story of historical perspective. When were these types of instruments created? By whom? And how?
The aquarium displays are even worse with tiny, filthy fish tanks housing a tilapia here and a hold fish there. You’ll find better displays at any pet store.
This adds no educational value or interest to anyone visiting Kisumu.

I had an excellent time at Kisumu Museum.
After signing in and sorting out payment (you should prepay using the Kenyan Museums website or there via mpesa - no cash), I went to the welcome centre where Maurice greeted me.
He walked me through the first museum that contained information about local tribes, their history, tools, customs, clothing before a section about local animals and wildlife.
We then walked round to the aquarium where he educated me about the local ecosystem in Lake Victoria, the functions of the fish and which ones they most like eating.
Then it was to an ethno village that demonstrated how Luo people used to set up their compounds, we walked around the small compound visiting the different huts whilst he explained more and also shared his own knowledge about Luo culture. He also introduced the staple food and how it was prepared which is growing nearby, and the process for when children move out.
Finally we visited the snake section and saw which snakes we want to avoid whilst here, as well as the tortoises and crocodiles.
He was extremely knowledgeable, enjoyed his job, and the whole experience pleasantly surprised me!

At the very moment I disembarked the plane from Nairobi and looked around at the soft lift light of the setting sun, I said: "I love this place." Yes, love at the first sight. And it had not changed. I am not fond of large cities, so Kisumu was a delight after staying a week in Nairobi.
Right on the following day, I visited the Impala Sanctuary, which turned to be rather disappointing (you won't see many impalas there and other animals are caged) and the Kisumu Museum. I was pleasantly surprised by the exhibition, partly indoors, partly outdoors, supportive staff, and the typical African patience if you stay a bit longer after the closing time. The best part was the Luo people village with a group of young people performing Luo traditional dances and songs. They were amazing. Their energy and excitement made me feeling younger. They should be recording and go to a talent competition. They will win!
If you have time, I suggest going for a day boat trip on the Lake Victoria and visit the Ndere island. The whole island is a National Park, no inhabitants, quiet, serene, no sign or sound of civilisation. It's a balm for the mind and soul. I wish I could spend a week there.
Other places not far away and worth to see include the Kakamega Rain Forest and the Rondo Retreat Center with its perfectly-maintained garden, delicious coffee, tea, and cakes.
And yes, I stayed in the Milimani Beach Resort I chose as a second option but found it a place I'd like to stay again.

Kisumu museum is such a cool place with rich history on Luo tribe culture.
Its definitely "a must see" place when visiting the lakeside region.
The place is a little bit deserted though. The team there need to do more marketing for this place to popularise it .

Trotzdem Empfehlung

It’s nice for a casual afternoon, you can learn some interesting things about Lwa their culture and way of living. There are aquariums too, not in the best condition though, crocodiles and snakes.
The only thing I didn’t like is that guides and dancers don’t want to do their stuff if you don’t want to tip them, which is not ok since you already pay for the ticket.

Hi, is it possible to pay with the card for museum entrance? Thank you in advance

@Jeremicmarija
I am not sure because I used mobile money howeve, in a park of its stature normally you are likely to get visa credit or debit/master cards facilities.
