My family and I shopped and ate our dinner on a weekday evening at this really special market which was formerly known as Sokcho Jungang Market or Central Market (속초중앙시장).
Getting there
Sokcho Tourist & Fish Market (속초관광수산시장) is located in the central part of Sokcho. If you are coming from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, take bus 1 or 1-1, alight at Gaetbae ipgu or entrance (갯배입구) bus stop on Jungang-ro (Jungang Road), cross the road, turn right, then turn left on Jungangro 147beon-gil and the Market “gate” is just 20 metres on your right. While we took a taxi there, we returned to Sokcho Express Bus Terminal by taking a bus from the Tourist & Fish Market (관광수산시장) bus stop on Jungang-ro (opposite Gaetbae ipgu bus stop). If you are coming from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal, you have to walk about 700 metres along Subok-ro, turn left at Jungangsijang-ro and the Market “gate” is about 50 metres on the right.
The Market, which opens daily at 8 am, has no entrance fee.
The attraction
This Market is housed in a large building with a basement, ground/first floor, and second floor (clothing arcade). The ground/first floor is really huge; it has over 500 stalls (stores) and so many alleys with stalls in every alley selling everything - daily necessities, vegetables, fruits, fresh or live seafood, dried or preserved food, street food (especially dakgangjeong) etc. The basement is where you could choose the fresh seafood and the stall will cook and serve these at its restaurant.
When we were there at night, several stalls were closed but the alleys were half-filled with locals and tourists. Nevertheless, we came for the delectable Sokcho (and Korean) street food and found these at the stalls in the Special Food Street alleys.
Hyuntaenae 현태네튀김 (stall number 12)
One of the stalls is Hyuntaenae. You cannot miss this stall cum restaurant because there are 3 persons wearing distinct orange apparel either cooking or preparing the dishes right in front of you. Hyuntaenae is big as it also has a dining area of orange and green chairs and white tables behind its cooking station and where we sat. We ordered susu bukkumi (수수부꾸미) and gamja jeon (감자전) for ₩10,000 and squid sundae (오징어순대) for also ₩10,000 – these were simply delicious and got us wanting for second round.
In case you associate the word “sundae” with ice cream, let me say that squid sundae has nothing to do with ice cream! Squid sundae is a large flat circular piece of squid that encompass rice noodles and vegetables (cabbage, carrots etc) within the ring and the entire filled squid is then soaked in beaten eggs and fried in the hot pan.
Gangwon-do province (where Sokcho is part of) has different types of jeon (전) or Korean pancakes, one of which is gamja jeon or potato pancake. Coming out of the hot frying pan, these golden potato pancakes are simply crispy and crunchy but oily.
After eating squid sundae and gamja jeon, we then ate susu bukkumi. Bukkumi originates from Gangwo-ndo province – it is a flat half-moon shaped pan-fried rice cake that is made with glutinous rice flour and stuffed with sweet red bean paste on the inside. When the bukkumi dough is made with glutinous sorghum flour (chalsusu garu 찰수수가루) instead of rice flour, it is known as susu bukkumi. We enjoyed this chewy cake dessert that is so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside!
Dakgangjeong 닭강정
We knew that when we are in Sokcho that we cannot miss the dakgangjeong. Dakgangjeong or sweet and sour chicken is made of bite-sized pieces of boneless chicken that is deep fried to golden brown perfection and then coated with a sticky, sweet and sour sauce topped with crushed nuts, and comes in spicy or non-spicy flavour. We read about a famous Manseok Dakgangjeong (만석닭강정) stall (number 16) who sells dakgangjeong, since 1983, in white boxes whereby the quantity in each box feeds at least 3 persons. When we went to this stall after dinner at Hyuntaenae, we found no long queue and realised later that the stall had closed at 7pm and were waiting for customers to collect their last orders just before stall closure. Well, never mind, I bought a cup of dakgangjeong from another stall along the same alley. It was another treat for my taste buds.
Other Korean street food
If we had more time, my family and I would want to savour the Sokcho-only-specialty sulbbang (술빵땟거리) for just ₩5000 at stall number 54 (always long queue), gamja ongshimi (감자옹심이), squid bread (오징어빵). Sulbbang (“sul” translated as “alcohol” and “bbang” translated as “bread”) is steamed fluffy bread made from rice flour dough that is naturally fermented from makgeolli or rice wine; the bread is topped with red and green beans.
Needless to say, when you are in Sokcho, the Sokcho Jungang or Central Market (now Sokcho Tourist & Fish Market) is one attraction that you must not miss! You just have to be here (like us) to experience the Sokcho way of life.

My son and I visited this tradtional market for buying some famous food. The tradtional market was the best market in Sokcho, and had many shop and restaurant. We bought some food that was famous in this market, and many people was crowded. The parking area was big, and the inside was more bigger than I think. For buying famous food, must visit this market in Sokcho area.

The best fresh/live fish is in the market in the basement. Although there are many to choose from, we have been going for years to the very best. If you are not into raw seafood, no problem, they make wonderful grilled fish, especially the flounder.
Their # is 145...They even have tables and chairs if you are not into sitting on the floor
