the drive to it can be a bit of an adventure! The first time we drove up to it, some 30 years ago or so, it was in a standard sedan. Today, we would not have made it in that vehicle, as the road is in really choppy shape in spots, and a water crossing would have stopped us. Good thing we bought a Subaru Forester a few months ago! It got us to the trailhead easily :-)

The trail is as lovely as I remembered it, and the tree is as spectacular as ever. The half-mile walk is very easy: mostly flat, not many rocky spots, lots of shade. The meadow nearby is gorgeous. The trail has some markers, but about half of them are missing, and there were no little guide leaflets, anyway :-( Still, this was a really enjoyable hour or so on a day that we spent taking "the roads less traveled."

The adventure getting to this trail was the most memorable part. It was about a 30 minute drive starting on pavement, going to dirt, then ending at an off-roading level. We almost gave up because we were in a sedan, but…with some careful planning we safely traversed all of the ditches and stones! I would have never continued if the road was wet at all.

Now, for the Champion Lodgepole Tree! The trail to the tree was easy with lots of cool rocks and trees to see. The tree is very impressive and it’s in great shape (thankfully it hasn’t been carved into). The tree is over 400 years old! That one tree is big enough to build a 1300 square foot house!

My husband I took our two dogs and two kids, ages 5 & 7, on this hike. Getting there was a little confusing and a high clearance vehicle should be used, but wow was it worth it. It was an easy hike and mostly shaded which was nice. The tree itself was beautiful and a site to see, but getting there was the true adventure. We continued past the tree to the Bluff Lake Reserve and I highly recommend doing so. It’s not too far and just breathtaking. Perhaps bring a picnic blanket and relax and enjoy the views. We got a bit lost heading back to our car so make sure to remember which path you took! This hike was the highlight of our trip. Nothing like being with the family in nature!

I absolutely loved this little hike/walk. It was full of beautiful flowers, large rock formations, a creek, big trees, a meadow, ferns! I took so many pictures because it made my forest-loving heart happy.
It was an easy walk and we added the Bluff Mesa trail.
The drive was tricky if you don't have a 4WD as the dirt road was uneven with lots of rocks and hills. We had to stop short of the trail head as the road was covered in water. But it was so worth the extra walk.

I love the shady trail, walking near the creek...but...the dirt road is long and since California had lots of rain this year, the road is quite rutted. Our van spun its tires in a couple of places. The last 100 yards before the trail, the stream crossed the road and it was about seven inches deep, so we decided not to try to go through. We parked near the road, and walked the rest of the way.
We took the trail to the Lodgepole pine, and then went further to the Siberia creek trail. My friend told me when we reached the end of the trail by some boulders. I didn’t see any sign stating it was the end...kind of strange. We saw a couple of snow plants.

My kids age 12 and 14 and I did this hike by way of Castle Rock Trail. You get to Lodgepole Pine by following the trail to the South down the back side of Castle Rock. Allow pretty much a full day to enjoy Castle Rock and Lodgepole Pine. Lodgepole Pine is a little bit past Bluff Lake. A little past Lodgepole Pine is a gorgeous fern grotto. Turn around from there and head back out the way you came if you are doing the Castle Rock route. LOVED IT!

This was a Great drive, on a rough road, and a nice hike to an amazing tree. It takes 8 adults with arms stretched out to go around this tree! The views of the valley below are beautiful and if you venture a little further, a beautiful little lake awaits you!!

Worth going to whether hiking, biking or 4WD. Beautiful Pine and the area nearby is also pretty. We took our motorcycles there.

The trailhead is on Highway 18 and there is a turnout big enough for 6-7 cars to park.
The Castle Rock trail is fairly well marked all the way past and around Castle Rock then further south to the 2N86 fire road. There is sort of a bouldering "chimney on the west side of Castle Rock that can be used to clamber to the top. Take care. (My 12 yo daughter did not do the climb this year because her tennis shoes were not very grippy on the rocks but did the climb the prior year in a better pair of shoes.) The trail skirts around Castle Rock and crosses a creek before climbing again in the direction of Champion Lodgepole Pine. The trail pulls up on Google maps and I had cell service the whole way out to the Champion Lodgepole Pine. Well worth a look even though the trail remains fairly well marked with paint blazes and arrow signs tacked onto tree trunks, just so you have confidence you are headed the right way. Make sure you turn RIGHT when you hit the 2N86 fire road and campground then look for the trail to branch off to the south towards Bluff Lake (see Google maps for details). The signs pointing to the Champion Lodgepole Pine in this area are for VEHICLES, so if you follow the signs to the left and then south you will add a couple of miles of boring fire roads to your hike. Bluff Lake is beautiful. There is a creepy cabin that reminded us a bit of Blair Witch Project near Bluff Lake on the trail to/from 2N86. The Champion Lodgepole Pine is massive. And there is a lovely fern grove a bit further along the trail to the south from the Champion Lodgepole Pine that is worth a look see.

As the title suggests, there's was a nice most of the easy hike in the San Bernardino National Forest. It's about a 20-25 minute drive to the trailhead and most of the drive is on a Gravely dirt road with a few rats here in there. Although most cars could drive to the trailhead, a four-wheel drive would be much easier. The hike itself is mostly flat with some Rolling Hills and Crosses a couple of small streams, bunch of large rocks and boulders and very scenic view.
