We were off to a bad start at the museum. A directional sign s indicated handicap entry was around the corner. When we got there, it was closed, but we rang a bell, and no one answered. We went back to the main entry and I managed to get up the stairs, holding onto the handrail. Finally we were in. Gretchen gave a $20 donation. And we rambled about the interior. There were no obstacles inside the museum. Local history was covered effectively with fine displays. I was most interested in some old beer trays from the Humboldt Brewery. I used used to collect these things. This is a fine city museum. There is good coverage of native American life in the area. Recommended.

This was our first visit and the museum was ok. It's pretty small and the collection is eclectic. They have many quilts, there is a long history of quilting in the area. The Victorian room was interesting with the information about Victorian era party games.

I was so surprised by this little museum. What a great place, so well curated. I thought this would be a quick visit, since the building is not that big, but I ended up spending quite a bit of time learning from displays on First Nations of the area, their basketry and herbs used for tinctures, their building style and materials, and their fisheries. I was also interested by the section of settlers and miners and their impact on original people and the environment. I was amused by the display on women and the weapons they used to defend themselves, from brooms and table knives to hairpins, flatirons, books, nursing pins, mops and, yes, revolvers. What a time, but then might still be the case for some on our own days. There is even a broken propeller from a British (Canadian?) DeHaviland airplane from 1925--barely evolved from what the Wright Brothers plane looked like. What a great little museum.

I had a free afternoon while in Eureka and stopped by the museum and discovered a real gem in the city. There was a special exhibit the day I attended featuring work by a local artist which was very well organized and displayed in addition to work from a jury reviewed competition. The building is a former Carnegie library which is beautiful as well.

Marbles from around the world were exhibited, as well as clothing and Native American displays. The history is interesting.

A special exhibit was there when we arrived - 158 marbles created by people around the world. Later in the month they would take the marbles and hide them for the treasure hunt.
Information the history of the Indian tribes was amazing.

It's not a huge place but offers a bit of the local history, including about the teacher who bought this bank building and launched the museum in the 1960s. Some really stunning examples of basketry done by local tribes.

This building was absolutely beautiful and filled with amazing items to browse and learn more about Humboldt County, the rich Native American history of the area, and was staffed by friendly and helpful employees. The location was right in the middle of downtown which made it great for walkability and to be near many of the local attractions and restaurants.

My wife and I were both impressed with the beautiful old building. My wife was in a wheelchair and there was plenty of room for her to move about the museum. There is a handicap entrance into the museum. We both enjoyed the museum. The basket collection was very interesting as well as a quilt that ladies in Eureka sent to President Grant.

I love local history. I like this little museum very much and came in July while a little cal quilt guild had a quilt show at Redwood Acres fair grounds. The museum took that opportunity to exhibit local antique quilts including one,ade locally and presented to presented to President Ulysses S. Grant and returned to Eureka by his heirs.
There is also a room dedicated to local Indian tribes who had a horrific history here.
I believe visits to small museums in rural areas tell us more about real American life and history than many large, more renowned museums.
