This was such a nice experience to do a quick hike. Go during low tide (for us it was early morning) so that you can get right up to the tower. We did have to time it to run across when the waves receded to get across but that was part of the fun.

Drove 2 hours to see the Pirate Tower and spent another 30 minutes trying to figure out where to park and walk to it. Finally got down the staircase to the beach, and the lifeguard came running as we tried to walk around the cove to where the tower is located. We were told that beach was closed and we couldn't go to it. Several others came with cameras shortly after, and they got yelled at as well. I was surprised, as I have read all about the tower and seen pictures of people below it. Nowhere did I see that lifeguards wouldn't let you near it. It was low tide, so danger of the water wasn't an issue. Very disappointed.

I stumbled on a local blog about the Pirate Tower while planning a visit to Orange County, and was so fascinated by the back story that I just had to see it for myself. My wife and I made our way to Victoria Beach south of the Laguna Beach business district by rental car then the free city trolley then a long walk to & down a well hidden beach access path. But the effort was rewarded by the destination.
We visited on a sunny & calm early afternoon in October when the tide was relatively low. The light winds & minimal waves did not offer the spectacular photo op action along the shoreline near the Tower; but they did make for a quiet & unhurried visit to this almost magical spot along the Pacific coast. Even after the exhausting walk back up the beach access walkway & stairs, we agreed that it was a great way to end our day trip to Laguna Beach. This is a must-see, hidden gem, all the other trite sayings attraction to visit for anyone with an imagination.

It is a nice walk on the beach with that scenic view. You can plan a day to explore the Laguna Beach downtown and Sawdust together. There are so many restaurants in the area
Don't follow Google Maps to enter the small streets... park your car along PCH when you get close and walk to the stairway on Victoria Dr.

I read about this in the California travel book, so wanted to see it. The access to it is under construction, but they do tell you where to go to get to it. You have to walk down 3 steep streets, then go along the beach to climb on the rocks to go around the cliff area to see it. It was well worth the work to get here. I truly enjoyed being there. Just be in pretty good shape for you have to climb back up those 3 steep streets.

A hidden gem in Laguna Beach. Before stumbling upon this place on Yelp, I have never heard of Victoria Pirate Tower.
I am glad that we found this place where we can enjoy the beauty of Southern California beaches and take pictures with a little history. The pictures we took created so many comments and inquiries from our friends asking about where this place is. The tower and the rocks surrounding the tower make the whole place look like we are in an European beach somewhere. A cool place to be indeed.
The best picture opp time is during sunset. The tide is low and the sunset view from here is just stunning. Especially if you come at the time with big waves, the splashes from the wave hitting the rocks create a very dramatic effect on your photos.
The tower itself is not a big deal but the scenery is spectacular. Since this is an obscure place, not to many people come to the tower. You have the whole place to yourself to watch the sunset and enjoy the ocean.
I heard the tower was built by a Senator in the 20’s as a way to get down to the beach and later was sold to a pirate enthusiast and made it into a story telling and treasure hunting castle.
Getting to this place is a bit challenging as it’s hidden underneath a neighborhood. The best way to get here is to park your car along PCH next to Montage hotel and follow the beach access stairs of the hotel to the Victoria beach. Then from there walk about a quarter of a mile to get to the tower.

This is a California classic, not easy to find but worth the journey to find this throwback to early California beach life.

We decided to check out this scenic and historic hidden gem for our one day get away during the hot Labor Day Weekend. For easiest parking, park on South Coast Highway (PCH) at the intersection with Nyes Pl. Then simply go underneath the bridge to Victoria Street and turn left and walk down to the end of Dumond Drive which goes directly to the sand. It’s about a five to seven minute walk. The day we went, high tide was around noon and low tide started with 6 am. We arrived at this enchanted place around 7:30 am and got to have an amazing photo opportunity with very few crowds. The Pirate Tower was originally built by a California Senator in 1926 to access the beach from his home on the cliff. There is even the ruins of what once was a huge seaside swimming pool with 4 foot thick walls. It felt really secluded here with an up close look at the tower and a panoramic view of the cliff, the rock formations, and ocean. Wear flip flops or sandals to protect your feet to get up to the base of the tower and to cross the other side of the tower since the path is not flat and can be very wet and slippery. Be cautious of the tides since the time-frame we visited was still low tide, but we got soaked and drenched once by the strong surf. Come at sunrise or sunset for the best pictures. We will absolutely come back to this dreamy surreal spot.

This eccentric staircase belongs to the property just above the cliff. I can just imagine how many thousands of pictures have been taken over the decades at this famous location. Whomever built it did an excellent construction job because the tides have not washed it away over the decades. These days the city would never allow something like this to be built on a public beach - truly one of a kind.

This place is a nice secluded beach inside of a neighborhood. There is a long flight of stairs down and a long walkway before you get to the beach. The tower is around the corner to the right. The Pirate tower is cool but the only thing is that you can't go inside. The tide and waves hit the area hard and we happen to be there when the surrounding region got flooded. My son really had a blast at the beach which is why we went there to his "happy place." The rip tides dragging in people and I had never seen a lifeguard do their thing and spring into action to save people. The Lifeguard saved two people at different times.
All in all, it is a nice beach but you will have to park aways as there is no parking in the neighborhood. It's a place we had no idea existed but was a nice discovery for us.
If you like the beach and like the mystery and stories of pirates then you will enjoy this place.
