May 14, 2024 only ran into one group of people. We went the opposite direction (not knowing) and took us 4 hours total however using maps.me and Alltrails we found it challenging to find the right path! Came out the ladder way and that was no problem whatsoever, really enjoyed that part after we got on the right path (could someone just take a can of paint with an arrow!). The 3 of us are 68 and average to good fitness however it was 38 degrees (we started at 9 am), didn’t bother me but my friend really feels the heat so a challenge for her - obviously take plenty of water and always wear a hat.

Been coming for years. Always as breath taking.
New ladders have been installed making it safer.
The road is a little rough a usual but this year was the best I’ve seen in 10+ yrs. ( February each year)

My wife and I spent a day hiking in Joshua Tree and two days hiking around Palm Springs (including Indian Canyons, Tahquitz Canyon and taking the aerial tram up to Desert View Trail). They were all great but our favorite hike of the entire trip was the Ladder Canyon / Painted Canyon loop. It's like three different hikes all in one-- first you climb your way through and out of Ladder Canyon (a great slot canyon), next you walk around the canyon rim with panoramic views in every direction, then you loop back down through the beautiful Painted Canyon. The 5 mile loop took us 2 1/2 hours at at leisurely pace. Overall a very unique experience, lots of great pictures. Highly recommend. FYI we did have a 4WD SUV so had no problems navigating the gravel road to get to the trailhead. Saw quite a few 2WD cars there too even though there are signs along the road that say 4WD only.

Wow, what a hidden gem! This was absolutely amazing. Lots of trails to accommodate various ages (our group ranged from age 36 to 72) and abilities. We did the Ladder Canyon and Painted Canyon Trail loop. It was just over 7km and a little more difficult and technically challenging (because of the ladders). The loop took about 2.5 hrs. Walking through the slot canyons was unbelievable and beautiful, using the ladders was challenging but so fun, views from the top spanned from snow capped mountains in the north to the Salton Sea in the south. Amazing! Completed mid December and the temperatures were perfect (around 19 celcius).

Nature reveals the beauty that we often don't see. The hike is a challenge but one worth doing. I love it! I felt restored and alive when I was there. Go Take a Hike. Cheers, Robin

This is a MUST DO if you are in Palm springs area. It's about an hour long drive from the downtown area and you are guaranteed to reach the trail head using a 4x4 vehicle which is all sand at certain spots. FOLLOW the signs (folks on the trail have used rocks to make arrows to follow) we covered around 8 miles on the trail.
The ladders are the star of the show here most are super easy to get you to some great views except one in the canyon which has a 3-4 feet gap. Check the weather before you go, avoid windy days.

First time in painted canyon today and should've driven a 4-wheeler as our SUV got in the sand. Ironically, it was a blessing in disguise as we met the nicest people who assisted us. The canyon was breathtaking but the best part is to know that there are still good people out there. Thanks to Kelly and Kayla from San Diego as well as Roman and Jenny from Gardena. Also thanks to the gentleman in the truck with his kids who offered us his shovel, umbrella and water due to the hot weather. I hope somehow this message finds you all safe and in good health and let you know that you made our day and we are privileged to meet such gracious people like you.

We had fun with the mountains and the Painted Canyon. We could not climb them. However, they were special. They were really an attraction!
When we drove, the road was sand with some pebbles.
We were here on time. We enjoyed the sunset. Wow!

How long is the hike? Are there benches along the way?

I'll be in the area next week and want to do this hike for the first time. I've read that the road is closed however there are recent posts stating a 4W drive can make it to the parking area or within a mile or two of the parking area. Also, the ladders are missing due to the storm in October. Does anyone have an update on these?
Rédigé le 6 décembre 2018
Yes the ladders are in disrepair. There has been storm damage in October and the trail is rough in places and I think the ladders are shakey and not altogether trust worthy. Also one is so poor are to require a belay by rope. I think I would wait awhile to do this hike until repairs can be made to the ladders. Someone could be hurt. The road is passable but don't push your luck,

I heard that the road to the trailhead was closed for construction a few weeks ago. I'm planning on going this upcoming weekend. Does anyone know if the road is open now?
Rédigé le 6 novembre 2018
Box Canyon Rd is closed from I-10, but you could reach Painted Canyon Rd from Mecca. Heavy storms on 2/14/19 could have caused more damage, going there today to check.

First time camping here, has anyone camped here before thay can offer tips? Joshua tree is completely booked so we want to venture off into somewhere less crowded. Can you set up camp anywhere? If so what is the best spot? Thanks!
Rédigé le 5 octobre 2018
There's a bunch of state camp grounds up in Big Bear about an hour from Joshua, really beautiful but it will be quite a bit cooler. Camping randomly in the Yucca Valley area is probably not the best idea.

We'd love to do this hike next week, but are looking for a local guide...anyone know of someone? Or has anyone gone on their own w/o a guide, that could let me know how hard it was to find your way? Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!
Rédigé le 8 mars 2018
We did not use a guide but there were plenty of other people on the trail on a Saturday morning - not crowded, but enough that if you had a questions you did not have to wait long to get an answer.
Two tricky parts - when you first enter the canyon from the parking lot - look for the rock arrow that points to the left. It looks like a pile of rocks - climb up and squeeze through and you will be in a small open area with two ladders - take the one on your right, not the one on your left. From there it is obvious and you will climb up to the top of the ridge. At the top of the ridge walk directly towards the cell tower - do not go right or left - just keep walking up the ridge towards the cell tower. It will feel wrong, but it is right. After about a 30 minute walk - you will find an obvious steep path to the right down in to a quite wide canyon on the right. Follow this canyon down hill to find all kinds of "painted rocks". It is a very gradual slope and very sandy. Easy walking for the most part. Plenty of places to sit in the shade if you need to, after the sunny walk on the ridge. Took us 3 hours but we are both about 60 years old. It is a beautiful loop - well worth doing.

This is not a state park, but the surroundings are amazing, and as we just found out this year there are many other hikes close by.( The Grotto, Hidden Springs, all in the Mecca Hills area.....) Enjoy!

Hi there. This hike looks amazing and my wife and I are interested, but we have a seven year old and a nine year old. They are good hikers, but I worry about the rope climb. Is the rope climb optional or is it a must on the climb? Has anyone done this with similar aged children?
Thanks guys!
Rédigé le 9 avril 2017
I don't know of any ropes on the main climb. All fixed ladders. The hike from the plateau toward the antenna towers and then back down the dry canyon is a bit of a slog so we usually just reverse our path back down the ladders.
Our group consists of 12 kids ages 6-16 and we've had zero issues 2 years in a row....
