Very interesting place! Grandkids had a great time trying to figure out how to use a typewriter. Lots of history and a beautiful building. Good for an family afternoon outing.

My partner and I were visiting the Cheech Museum, learned they had an agreement with Riverside Art Museum (next block) so we toured there too. We were extremely pleased to learn Charles Bibbs had an exhibit at the time of our visit. As his work is beautiful.

The Riverside Art Museum (RAM) and The Cheech are lessons in exterior versus interior beauty.
One admission fee grants access to both.
At the RAM, an impressive red-roof Spanish edifice is inviting, but the interior exhibits left me feeling vacant and unimpressed. The art collections featured monotonous work by social justice activists. I felt like I was scrolling an Instagram gallery in 2020 and not visiting at an art museum in southern California. The central courtyard/patio is the only thing worth seeing inside. And the building exterior is the most impressive part of this museum.
Down the block at The Cheech, a boring, brutalist building houses vibrant Chicano art. Unlike the RAM, I got a sense of southern California culture through the colorful oils and acrylics featuring landscapes, architecture, and cultural features of the area.
These museums showcase that beauty comes from authenticity, not from contrived conflict or victimhood.

attractive building from the outside, but not much inside. Courtyard takes up much of the space and the other galleries are pretty disjointed and not memorable.

One block away of two buildings, old one is small, new building is big. One ticket can visit both. You still can find something unique style to attract you that you can't find out from the other art museum. People are friendly.

So with the Cheech Marin Museum of Chicano Art opening we also went over to the Riverside Art Museum just a block away. No reservations and free to access (though you really should drop a donation in the box!)
There was some of the same Art from the Cheech along with other excellent exhibits on rotation. The building itself is well worth checking out as well.
With people coming in from other areas more and more this is a great place to give yourself from free culture!

The museum is small which is why i gave it 4 rating but it is fun, has community work as well as recognized artist. Ive been more than once and they change exhibits often so theres always something great to see. Reasonably priced and well worth a visit

The Riverside Art Museum’s building is one of
Southern California’s architectural gems. Originally built as a YWCA, the Mediterranean Revival structure is the work of the great Julia Morgan, America’s first licensed woman architect, best known for San Simeon, aka Hearst Castle. The former swimming pool (long cemented over) and communal spaces now house a modest but fascinatingly eclectic collection and host temporary exhibits of first-rate quality. The museum doubles as a center for community artists, especially from local schools; if you’re lucky, you’ll catch an exhibit of fledgling efforts on the second-floor promenade. The adjoining auditorium (which predates Morgan), formerly a monument to fallen WW1 veterans, is also worth a look.
