Easy Hiking, Ocean Views
mai 2019 • En famille
There are a number of trails and fire roads, some connecting with the UCSC trail system. From the meadow by the abandoned club house, you get an expansive view of the city and bay.

Several Good Hikes Close to Downtown
mai 2019 • En couple
Pogonip is a nice option if you're looking for a hike with some options. It starts out in an open uphill with nice views back toward the water. Then it goes into the redwoods. There's a spring (not much to see) and a lime kiln interesting. The trails can get narrow which I like. Just bring bug spray for the ticks and prep for poison oak which encroaches on the trail. If you're prepared it's not a big deal. Worth the effort if you looking for a good hike.

There is no real parking at the trail head so we parked lower on the street near the Tannery and walked.

Don't go, it isn't safe.

I won't go here because there are people camping in the woods all around this area. The City of Santa Cruz does little to get a handle on the homeless population which is substantial. There is a soup kitchen not too far away. Also cougars in this area, no kidding. I used to go here as a kid, but no more. Go to West Cliff for a safer walk. I wish this weren't so.

This is probably one of the best places close to town to get away.
Pogonip has a long history. Once was a ranch then a country club, now its a city park.

The trails are well maintained and east flow to follow. if you go in the early morning or evening you will surely see wildlife like Bobcats, Coyote, ground varments and even a nesting Bald Eagle.

This park is totally free but you have to get creative with parking. Park on Hwy 9 and walk in or Uber from downtown.

The park is the home to one of the best routes into the Santa Cruz mountains on a mountain bike. The Emma McCary Trail, its a multi-purpose trail but don't hike it, It gets heavy bike traffic.
Again, parking is bad, ride your bike on the levee from ample parking and beer downtown. All year is great to ride except on heavy rainy days.

Historic Hiking Area

Pogonip is a great place to take an easy day hike. It's not well-known, so usually isn't super-crowded. You can hike out to the old club house. Pogonip was a country club back in the 20's (crazee parties, apparently). It has also been used in movies, most notably "The Lost Boys". If you go in the spring, you'll see lots of wildflowers. The redwoods are there all the time!

An easy walk in the Redwoods
juin 2018 • En famille
Beautiful place for a stroll or trail run. Really clear path, nicely marked. Not crowded, but there are other walkers and runners. Tons of dog walkers. The first mile can be hot and has no shade. But after that, it’s cool under the Redwood trees.

There are treasures to be found ... like a labyrinth to walk, stacking rocks, a koi pond.... and be on the look out for a banana slug!

Bring water and a hat.

good walking paths

There used to be major drug-dealing here but new pathways, more foot traffic, and more police enforcement has cleaned it up. The trails are beautiful, close to the back of UCSC and State highway 9.

Great little hiking spot
sept. 2017 • En famille
This is one of those many hiking spots locally, one of few which has great wind-swept views of the coast without the windy coastal effects. Accessible through a couple of points.

Beautiful Hiking Trails
déc. 2017 • Entre amis
We start at the top of Spring Street. There is free parking. You can walk trails all the way to Highway 9 and even continue to Henry Cowell. At the very end, the bike trails begin. No bikes are allowed on the Spring Street side. We tend to stay on the main path. Watch for tics if you bring a dog. Keep dogs on leash as there have been coyotes and other sightings.
