Very interesting and lots of original artifacts. Hard to believe that he and his wife and 15 children all lived there!!

This is a beautiful home on lovely grounds. The printed guide to the home is helpful in understanding the place. Parking in available on-site! We saw a lot of cacti on our trip, but this place was the only one that had cactus flowers blooming! This place is free if you went to the nearby Mission in town.

The Gen. Vallejo Home is a preserved residence dating from the early days of the town in the 19th Century. It includes the main house, a barn, other outbuildings and cottages, as well as a small water resevoir.
There is a good-sized parking lot for visitors (it is about 3/4-mile from the plaza in town), and there are public restrooms on the north side of the lot. Entry is via the restored barn where exhibits and artifacts introduce one to the family and cultural and political situation at the time they were here. The entry fee is $3.00/adult, but that also covers a couple of other historical sites around town, if seen the same day. A state park ranger in the barn was most helpful with our questions and suggestions for how to see the grounds. Visitors are provided with a sheet (to be returned to the desk) that explains the various places on the property and gives details of the rooms within the house.
The main house is probably the most popular draw. It is remarkly well-preserved and excellently furnished for the period, and it gives a vivid idea of life back then for the fairly-well-to-do. There is some weather (and bird) damage to the exterior of the house, which is unfortunate, but doesn't detract from the experience.
Other structures include cottages (in varying condition) and a kitchen (behind the house). And there are lots of cactus growing on the grounds too.
Overall, a fun and informative historical outing.
One more thing: look closely at the large pine tree about 20 feet away from the front of the house. It is covered with holes, as high as one can see, with each hole neatly plugged with an oak acorn. The local Acorn Woodpeckers have been hard at work!

Several times we had driven past the sign at the long driveway to General Vallejo’s Home so I suggested we stop there for an hour before our wine tasting. The general was a key figure in Sonoma’s history, supplying water for the city from his cistern, among many other accomplishments. The docent was very helpful in explaining what there was to see. There are detailed historic exhibits in the barn, and a handout that explains the rooms in the well-preserved house. It’s well worth a stop, especially if you enjoy historic homes.

I would recommend this self-guided tour to anyone who is interested in early California history and/or appreciates historic homes. The docent(?) who greeted us was friendly and helpful. I would have liked to have seen more restoration in the house but understand financial restraints these days.

Don't be fooled by many of the pictures. The Vallejo house is set back about a quarter mile from Spain street and is part of the Vallejo state park complex The walk to the house from the main street is a tree-lined, gorgeous entry in to what was the grandest estate in the community at one point. The general who had many children and a major estate which still grows fruits, nuts, and other foods was a presence in the community. The local community takes pride in this hidden gem. There is a picnic area if you'd like to sit down and have a rest or a meal, but it is flanked by warnings of rattlesnake occupation. We further stretched our legs.

Great history of this area of the community

Also, worth noting that this gives you entrance to the Solano mission.

We weren’t able to tour inside the home, but really enjoyed walking the trails surrounding the area. Farmer’s Market was right off the trail as well as an historic vineyard. Worth seeing!

General Vallejo was a key player in having California become part of the US. A nice, little house for a man of such importance. A must visit as part of learning the history of California.

The preservation of the home and grounds is well done. The docents obviously love their jobs and are very helpful and informative.

As a child I lived next to Gen. Vallejos grandson. The house he lived in at the time was built by my father.
Beautiful grounds and plenty of history of how life was in Sonoma "back" in the early days.
