My husband and I visited the Butler-McCook House and Gardens in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday June 3, 2023, taking the 1:00 PM guided house tour. This interesting historic landmark is part of Connecticut Landmarks, a group of historic homes located throughout Connecticut. We found out about these homes because they recently were added to the list of NARM Museums in Connecticut, which is quite exciting!

The guided house tour was a nice walk back through time and was quite interesting, being a very good way to learn about the family members who lived in the house, the time period that they lived there and the house architecture, both inside and outside. Our tour guide, Jana, gave an excellent tour. She was very friendly, knowledgeable and informative, and provided us with great details about the house and the people that lived there. She pointed out the unique features about the house and about the family who lived in it for four generations, 189 years.

The furniture and furnishings, including very nice paintings and toys, were authentic and original to the house and definitely well-preserved and being of high quality. I definitely liked the beautiful sofa that was nicely restored after it was badly destroyed when a SUV plowed into the house in 2002, as well as the other collections of items/objects throughout the house, including a very nice toy collection.

The guided house tour took about 1 hour. It was great that we were able to take pictures inside the house, making for a lot of nice memories

I also liked the separate Main Street History Center portion/section of the house. This section consisted of exhibits that provided very good information on early Hartford, in particular on living and working on Main Street in Hartford with write-ups about the houses, their architecture, and the many businesses as well as the many changes that took place throughout the years on Main Street. This section was definitely quite educational.

The unique flower gardens were beautiful at the time of our visit with everything being in full bloom. They were definitely well cared for and nice to take a lot of photos of. The grounds are well-maintained and quite impressive. We toured the gardens in a self-guided tour both before and after our guided house tour.

In total. our tour of the house, its grounds, and the History Center, took a little less than an hour and a half. It is both very surprising and quite nice that this house and its surrounding grounds still exists on Main Street. It is definitely very unique and an interesting part of Main Street and of history in general.

We were also quite fortunate to be able to park at 59 South Prospect Street, just before the Amos Bull House, the Connecticut Landmark Headquarters, heading south down South Prospect Street, at the time of our visit. This parking lot maybe easy to miss, but I believe it was brick, and it looked like there was only room for a few cars. However, I am not certain if that is the case because we did not have any problems finding a space to park at the time of our visit. .

We recommend a visit to this house, especially if you like historic places. We hope that you have the opportunity to enjoy it as much as we did. We look forward to going to more of the historic homes that are part of Connecticut Landmarks.

We had a tour of this historic family home, preserved in what is now the middle of the city. It was fascinating, and beautifully maintained.

Very informative and historical experience. Our docent was very knowledgeable. Since the Mccook's had an Ohio connection we were also interested in that being from Ohio.

The Butler and McCook families were so interesting, so the tour of the house and what you learn about them as you go on the tour is very entertaining. The garden is so pleasant to relax in. I recommend this site.

This household might have been an interesting tour, but the staff was not terribly knowledgable, and the top floor was not open to the public. The gardens are fantastic, though!

We were lucky to get a private tour. The house was grand and the garden outside was beautiful. The lady giving the tour was informative and took the time to answer question after question from my 8-year-old. We parked at a city lot a couple of blocks away which we paid a fee for. Amazing this house wasn’t demolished with other homes pictured on the walls. Worth the visit if you are interested in history and are in the area.

This was the best thing in the city. I did a last minute jaunt up to Hartford to check the box for Connecticut in my quest for all 50 states. I was feeling kinda meh about the city, but then I decided to go into the house on a whim. The house, representing the history of the families involved, has really eclectic mix of items and stories, which is enough for 4 stars.

However, the volunteers there were awesome. I had great personal 2 hour tour, and great conversations about some really random subjects. Their passion for history and the community is infectious…and deserves an extra star.

If you're into old restored homes with history this place is more than reasonable. Parking in rear, some gardens. Short walk to Wadsworth Atheneum, Ancient Burial Ground, Bushnell Park and several other nearby venues; a few blocks from CT river.

I've been to an endless amount of New England historical houses and quite frankly they start all seeming alike. This one isnt well advertised and I've walked by it and not noticed it, but it's worth visiting. There is so much original items and informations to document the family that lived here--I ended up spending 2 hours here. Tour guide was passionate about history and fit the tour to my needs. Support the house of you can!
