This is a classic restored downtown train station, with displaying inside providing an overview of its history as a railroad depot. A nice touch for each waiting room bench was a display case showing different classic New Haven Railroad trains from over the years; each as a Lionel train set. A must visit for railroad & toy train fans.

So glad I had my husband pull-up so I could pop in and give it a look for a minute. (Beware of the vagrants begging for money just outside the door.). For an architecture-buff, this place will not disappoint.

I hadn't been in this train station in 50 years, and was struck by how beautiful it is. Small take-out food shops along one side of the station and a newstand; beautiful old benches, marked for social distancing, quiet, clean, peaceful. Staff were very helpful and responsive to my request for information.

This is one of the most beautiful interiors of a railroad station in the East! Look at the ceiling and the beautiful wood detail! It’s a special place with lots of history on the New Haven-New York line for Metro North! If only the trains were as nice as the station!

Had a meeting in the city and the train is the best option. Arrived early to get a parking spot in the garage, with minimal issue, and then into the garage with ease. Had time to stop for coffee and a snack and announcement came. Boarded train and had no issue with seating. Return trip was just as simple. Best way into the city.

I am requesting a refund for my trip from New Haven to Boston (South Station) on 12/22/2019 that was scheduled to depart New Haven at 7:00pm. The bus number was 2072. This bus trip was booked through greyhound on a Bolt Bus. The bus did not arrive to New Haven to pick me up at 7:00pm. I was unable to track the location of the bus online via greyhound or bolt. I called Bolt’s helpline multiple times. They told me they could not track the bus. They told me the bus was delayed by two hours, it would pick me up at new haven and head to Boston now at 9:00pm and that they had sent me an email. I checked my email repeatedly. There was no email.
There was no bus to pick me up at New Haven between 8:40 and 9:00pm. At 9:02pm the Bolt Bus number 2090 I believe arrived to New Haven, allowed me on the bus, and left New Haven as scheduled at 9:30pm. I would like to make it clear that I left New Haven 2.5 hours later than my scheduled time. Also the driver of bus 2090 was incredibly rude. He was unprofessional, raised his voice to me, and told me that most of the drivers for you company were new, didn’t know to stop in New Haven and “probably never stopped here”. He stated he believed the bus driver drove straight threw to Boston. Later he called someone and told me two bus had been combined, however I never received an email or any notification of this. Of note the greyhound office at this station was closed and there was no one I could talk to in person about this issue. I am very dissappointed in your service. I expect a refund for this scheduling disaster.

MetroNorth provides frequent and relatively comfortable transportation between Union Station in New Haven and Grand Central Station. The New Haven Railroad Station is modest, clean and easy to figure out. Public parking next door is convenient and fairly priced.

Beautiful architecture
It hosts a dozen shops to eat. Plenty of area to sit and wait in the lounge.
However there aren't many restrooms. At times, there are long queues to use restrooms.
Personally, I liked the architecture (vintage vibes) of this station, more than any other thing.

With the start of the 62 mile Hartford Line (Springfield, MA) in June 2018, Connecticut's busiest railroad station just got busier. For anyone coming from Western CT, MA, VT, and NH, a rider will often change trains in New Haven by simply walking across the platform. Very convenient. Tip: Go to the car just behind the engine, which they apparently open up at New Haven to help riders coming from Hartford, Springfield, and Greenfield.
The station is an excellent place to watch commuter trains (CTrail, Metro North, and Shore Line East) and Amtrak trains (Northeast Regionals, Acela Hartford Line, and Valley Flyer).
Amtrak's 4 car Valley Flyer Trains bring new service to 3 stations north of Springfield: Holyoke, Northampton, and Greenfield, Massachusetts.
Amtrak just created a new section on its webpage, called "Valley Flyer" to promote its service between New Haven and Greenfield,
MA.

Possibly the worst food available at any railway station. No drinkable coffee and food was limited to Dunking Donuts, or Dunking as it now appears to be know and a stroppy man man wearking a greasy apron behing a counter.

Several railroad compares - Amtrak & MetroNorth - operate trains through New Haven's Union Station and so may have different operating hours for the ticket agent windows. If you are there when the ticket windows are open, you can purchase train tickets (with credit cards or cash) from the agents.
If you are there when the ticket windows are closed, you can still purchase tickets using the automated vending machines all the railroad companies use these days. These vending machines typically only use credit cards to pay for the tickets.

Is there a waiting area to pick up passengers at Union Station New Haven?

Just outside the station doors there is a driveway with about half a dozen spaces where you can wait. If those are full, there are legal parking spaces across the street.

Is 21 minutes enough time to change trains? I am traveling from Stamford to Hartford.

I think it is small enough to do so. Very organized and easier than flying!

We are taking a regional train in from Mystic, and then hopping the Acela into Baltimore. We have about a 2 hour window where we were hoping to grab lunch in town. Is there a place in the station we can check our baggage for that duration?

Hasbrouck Heights, NJ2 660 contributions
You might want to check with the railroad on that one. There is a place for information inside the terminal that you can stop and talk with them off the ticket booth area. I am almost sure there is just check the website.
While in New Haven, stop at Louis Lunch for a burger (cash only), which is always mentioned on the Food Network and the burgers are excellent or try Claire's for drinks and pastries, which has been around for years.
If you have a lot of time, walk to Wooster Street (New Haven's Little Italy to Pepe's Pizza for the Clam pie or to Sally's for pie. Both are really good. All of these places are institutions in the city and if it is a nice day walk around the Green by Yale. Downtown New Haven has vastly improved since I lived there and it is a nice city.

What are the best places to see near the station?
Justin W
Hasbrouck Heights, NJ2 660 contributions
Within walking distance, about ten minutes is Downtown New Haven and there are loads of restaurants there. Louis Lunch is famous for their burgers, Claire's is great for coffee and pastry, if you have time to go to Wooster Street, their Little Italy, try Pepe's or Sally's for pizza and then Lucebella's for the best pastry you will ever eat. If not those, there are loads of other restaurants to try just a ten minute walk from the station towards Downtown.
Take time to visit the Green and Yale.
