This is an amzing museum! The staff is very passionate about what they do and knowledgable about Native Americans, especially the tribes native to Conneticut. Additionally, the Wigwam Escape room is a fun part of the museum and allows you to experience history in a different way. I would recommend coming to the museum, and especially partcipating in the Wigwam Escape room.

We came across this museum while checking on things to do around Washington which is a lovely small town. We were on holiday from England and interested in learning more about the native American people during our visit. We were welcomed in the foyer of the museum by our guide and then spent a very interesting couple of hours learning about native American life and culture. Our guide was very knowledgable and presented well due to his obvious enthusiasm for the subject, We really enjoyed our visit and came away with a much better understating of native American history and how they lived. Highly recommended, but this museum needs better marketing as we were lucky to find it.

How have lived in Connecticut over 25 years and not known of this incredible little museum?

Nestled deep in the woods with only minimal highway signage, this modern, circular museum highlights the centuries of history of North American woodland Indians in a well designed, artifact-rich collection.

Wait for the docent-led tour. Ours was a young historian who really knew his stuff.

And don't miss the historic recreations of wooden Indian homes just a few yards up the hill. Kids will really enjoy exploring the grounds.

We were lucky to be one of the first groups to participate in the Wigwam Escape room adventure at the IAIS. A truly great experience that immerses you into a day of a 1518 native’s life in New England. The visuals and sounds inside the room are fantastic and help you navigate the room and its puzzles. Also, visiting the museum before the escape room helps to understand the daily life. It was truly a fun, challenging and educational escape from our 21st century lives.

My family and I visited this museum yesterday. We were assigned a guide, whose name, unfortunately, I cannot remember. She was excellent, very knowledgeable and great at delivering the information. She answered the adults’ questions in a very friendly and professional manner. She was great with the children. Her guidance made our visit very productive and pleasant.
The museum itself is a gem. We are planning to go back.

Fascinating exhibits that tell the story of pre-contact Native American life in New England and Connecticut. The exhibits do a great job of capturing pre contact life and the culture of Native Americans after contact. A highlight is the outdoor replicated 15th century Algonkian Village. Another highlight and must see is the escape room that has just opened - Wigwam Escape 1518 it is awesome. They have a lot of programs and I hope to go to the Maple Sugaring program in March.

Kids love this American Indian Museum. There are trails to follow and the museum offers plenty to see in artifacts and diorama.
There are also really neat long houses that I think
are close to the actual size of the real thing. It is a fascinating and fun place to visit.

I attended a workshop today where construction of Bark Baskets was being taught. The instructor was well versed in the history and uses of this type of basket and her instructions were clear and easy to follow. These baskets are made from bark that has been removed from a living tree in small patches so that the life of the tree in not compromised. The bark is then soaked to soften it. Stitching the bark together is accomplished with the use of an awl to make holes and the stitching material is vine or cedar root fibers that are collected in the forest. It was a long process, but I am happy with the result although I don't think I will make this type of basket again. The Institute for American Indian Studies is a wonderful place to enjoy the art and culture of the Native people of the North Woods. I highly recommend a visit.

Gem in a Woodland! A beautifully informed museum lay-out. I've been in numerous American Indian museums and this facility is outstanding in its Eastern Woodland content. Do plan to not rush through the exhibits. The Elders portraits are wonderful paintings. Staff is kind and a personal tour is available. Gift shop and restrooms within building. Adults $10, Seniors $8, children (3-12) $6. This is a Blue Star museum.

Recently visited the Institute and truly enjoyed our visit. Two staffers gave us a personal tour of the highlights of the museum and its programs. Very nicely designed exhibits which show the history, culture, artifacts and life of Connecticut native Americans. The museum helps the Indians' lives come alive through a full scale longhouse inside and a collection of three dwellings in an outside village. Great way for kids, scouts, tourists to learn about life among the tribes 1000 to 400 years ago! Highly recommended if you're in the area.
