Not a lot of gardens. Not a lot of house. But the verbal history kept coming on and on and on for over an hour. Despite the very long speechification I am still unclear as to who was who. But, I digress. This is not a large structure, but it is an important one. If I had been able to get a condensed version of who, what, when, where, and why it would have been more interesting. As far as my ability to memorize event dates, I can't. Maybe the numerous dates and minute details shared might be more meaningful to others. I was glad that I had paid only a small entry fee because I don't want to pay for something that turns out to be painful when it could have been wonderful.

Villa symbol of the neighborhood, a large residential area that differs from the rest of Miami for the extraordinary presence of greenery and many high-quality villas. A beautiful neighborhood.

Docent Gay, a lovely lady, very kindly opened up the home early for us on a Saturday morning. 12 of us from the British women’s club came for a private tour and it was absolutely fascinating. Wonderful to know the rest of the history of the Merrick family and Coral Gables and to find out that the city of Coral Gables was actually named after this house, and not the other way around! Beautiful home with lovely furnishings inside and some fab stories of the family and the city. It really took some guts to move from the north east to Miami 100 years ago when it was nothing but swamp land! We also appreciated the Merrick house allowing us to have a picnic lunch on the patio afterwards. Grounds are very nice and there is a lovely clean toilet to use as well. Fascinating and under $5 to tour!

This is where it all started. Our docent, Kurt S., shared the fascinating history of Coral Gables, the surrounding area, and the man behind it all, George Merrick. We really enjoyed the home tour and will definitely be back.

The title is about the best compliment I can give. I won't bore you by redescribing the venue as others have ably done.
This is THE gateway to Coral Gables. If you want to understand the area, rather than just look at it, do this.
Our docent, Ms Gay, is a jewel of Coral Gable lore. She loves her hometown and it shows.

Wonderful docent led tour on a Sunday! Unlike many other historic homes this one has about 60% of the families original possessions. A talented family, headlined by George Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables. Impressive paintings, historic family photographs and the knowledge of the docents makes for a memorable hour. Also visiting the nearby Venetian Pool and Biltmore along with the well preserved neighborhood in Coral Gables add to this experience.

Wonderful, informative and entertaining tour!
Make sure you drive or walk around the nearby streets to experience Mr. Merrick's vision. Don't forget to visit the Venetian Pools too.

The Merrick House is now open and it is a fantastic place to learn the history of beautiful Coral Gables. The docents do a wonderful job of giving an informative tour and the gardens are lovely! Meticulously renovated and maintained this is a little slice of history in the heart of Coral Gables.

We were treated to a tour by our learned tourguide, Colette. She took us through the house, room by room, explaining the history of the layout of the house, the origins of the Merrick family, and even described the figures in many of the paintings in great detail!
Colette was a great tourguide, answered the many questions that came her way, and seems to have a deep and admirable appreciation for the history of the area. The house is lucky to have her!
It was a fascinating walk through a little local history, and I'm glad we took the opportunity to give it a shot.
Don't miss this place!

Just three of us touring on a Saturday - and as a consequence the docents took extra time decribing the house, its history, Coral Gables, its history, and the (surprisingly good) family art work displayed - several good enough that they deserve to be 'recognized'. The house is an interesting 'cottage' in and of itself, and the grounds are lovingly taken care of. Admission, at $5, has to be one of the bargains anywhere. All in all a very pleasant perhaps 90 minutes, and CG itself is worth a stroll around; a very pretty community at its core, with things to look at like the Biltmore & surrounding neighborhoods as well as a welcoming commercial center.
