We paddled to Indian key on our paddleboards and kayaks. But you can also rent from Robbie’s. If using your own gear, you can’t put in from Robbie’s, but can from the shoreline on the highway.
Very beautiful shallow paddle out to the island. There’s a kayak landing on the west side in an old abandoned dock. Walking around the island had many beautiful plants and ruins with informational placards. We spent most of our time on the east side of the island, fishing and snorkeling. We even saw a shark on the east side when we were leaving.
Took us about 45 minutes to paddle each direction.

Kayaked or if Robbies. The island is stunning and the history great. I downloaded the walking tour and it was very informative.
The views from the island are wonderful.

Because of storm damage, the dock is unusable. You have to use your own boat and anchor several feet (100+) offshore and swim or wade in.
Snorkeling is great and the island is interesting (there are signs that explain the history).

We kayaked over and enjoyed the settlement history. I suggest a little research before visiting, but worth the excursion, especially in the blue water

We arrived for breakfast. The trailer trash Bloody Mary was a hoot filled with all sorts of goodies. It was raining and the roof leaked. No one was bothered as long as patrons were dry. Service and breakfast were excellent.
Wandered the property after watching tarpon fed by customers, gift shops, boating rentals etc. a really fun spot to visit. Will definitely return…

We kayaked against a strong current and arrived in ten minutes from Robbie's Marina. We walked the island and learned a lot of the history including the post office and postmaster's house ruins. Some interesting facts about the island key was not expected. highly recommended. Then lunch at Robbies!!!
Cool story : As we approached INDIAN KEY on our kayaks a "Goofy Goober" renting a boat tore up their prop getting close to the key as well as a bunch of sandbar. Followed by a Jet skier who was apparently a Keeper of the Indian Key shouting "who rented you this boat??" They were yelled at for ten minutes as its illegal to approach via boat (only Kayak) its only 12' of water for 1500' around the island (very shallow).

The pier is in disrepair so you have to swim or Kayak in to visit Indian Key. The water was so shallow that about 500 feet of the swim was in under 12" of water.
Once you get to the island there is a PAY STATION!?! Seriously, I just swam to the island, where do they expect that I come up with the fee?
Besides the weird, honor system, pay station, the island is cool. Great history, if you take the time to read the plaques. Picturesque views and sandy walking trails.

Great adventure! We kayaked out to Indian Key and snorkeled off the coast. We also learned quite a bit about the island with the Florida Stories walking tour. Very fun afternoon!

Cool history of early keys going back to the 1830’s. 20-30 minutes kayak there and back from Robbies. 30 minutes all you need to explore. Worth a visit if you have time

This is a cool little island set up to show its history. We kayaked there from Robbie's and had a nice little walk around the island with guiding signs but you can also download an audio tour to your phone. It's quite cool to imagine this old town, and it's quite cool to have a place like that to visit by kayak.

Does this require a permit? Also which kayak rental would be closest to Indian Key?

There is a self serve pay station located on the island by the kayak landing. The fee is 2.50 per person. Robbie’s marina is the closest place to rent kayaks.

How long does it take to paddle from Robbies?
Rédigé le 9 février 2017
It took about 45 minutes one way. We were a large group with some younger kayakers. It's about 0.8 miles, and (very!) shallow water.

Is there parking on road and spot to launch our own kayaks?
Rédigé le 8 juin 2016
We launched from Robbie's Marina and we also just launched from one of the roadside pull offs.

I would like to know where can I rent a kayak to get to the Indian Key?
Rédigé le 25 avril 2016
We have our own but you can rent a kayak from Robbie's Marina to get to Indian Key.

Saw your post about Indian Key and wondered if you had a contact number for Greg your guide. Did you hire him out of Robbies? Thanks.
