Buford Dam is a very cool place to visit! The dam itself is amazing.
Lots of history during construction. You have a fabulous view of the Chattahoochee River and Lake Lanier at the same time as you are crossing the dam.
It's a good place to take visitors and pictures with nice back drops.
During Winter months you can see the big Christmas tree all lit up at Lake
Lanier Islands Nights of Lights. If your into camping check this area out as well
as there are some really nice campsites.

We liked this dam and the fact that you could drive over it, and get some very nice lake views from the park. It's an earthen structure, so don't expect the Hoover Dam, but it's rather nice.

We just drove through the park, but it was beautiful. It had lots of hiking trails and saw people fishing downstream catching trout. They had several picnic areas and pavilion with restrooms. Also saw bikers.

rarely crowded, great parking and restroom.. We start Fishing here and float to Mcginnis Ferry quote often. Park one vehicle at McGinnis Ferry and drive up to Buford Dam. Be sure and check the water release schedule on the radio.

We explored parts of the park and they were beautiful. We would have liked to have seen more informational displays and info on the trails.

Very scenic area with bridge fishing available to anglers looking to hook a rainbow trout. One family had small children swimming in an area off from the main waterway. Not too sure about that one. Even had their dog jumping in chasing sticks. Limited parking- parking pass needed & over priced. Must have been 12 or more people fishing on the bridge. Not much to see or do after about an hour.

Forsyth County has some of the best parks in the country. Lake Lanier is so serene and comforting that a walk on the trails is better than a tranquilizer

I was in the area looking for an afternoon trail and found the Laurel Ridge Trail which offers views of Lake Lanier, the Chattahoochee River, and some wooded walks between. A 3.8 mile loop. Sold!

I drove to the Lower Overlook parking lot and after looking at the map posted I decided to do the trail in a counter-clockwise fashion since that’s how the points of interest are oriented. It was a chilly February day and there were very few people on the trail. It’s listed as moderate, largely because you do have quite a number of steep hills you ascend and descend, but the paths are well-maintained and it’s a pretty walk even when the trees are bare.

You don’t spend much time alongside the Chattahoochee but what little you do is pretty and enjoyable - I just reviewed Chattahoochee Bend State Park which I visited last week, but I can honestly say I liked this scene better than what I saw there. The woods are more scenic too.

The last half of the trail in the direction I took brings you up to Lake Lanier itself - you’ll pass a couple of automobile grazing areas em route but the renewal of civilization has its perks with its restroom options and clearcut overviews out on the lake.

That said, the biggest problem as of February 10 2019 is that the last half-mile is blocked off due to maintenance. I was rather dismayed, particularly as the main interest points for lakeside views were in this section, and I was all set to deduct a point from my review for this alone. Especially as it meant I needed to walk along a roadside to get back to my car. But an hour’s worth of wisdom made me realize that at least the outage occurred at a point where there was an easy alternative route to close the loop with no real loss of distance or time. And better to close it off than just not notify people if there’s a problem along the way, like what I encountered at Chattahoochee Bend. So disappointing, yes, but not a killer. And had I done the trail clockwise, I would’ve been aware of this outage from the get-go - I likely wouldn’t have taken the trail at all in that case, and as such I would’ve deprived myself of the good time I did have. Non, je ne regrette rien!

Beautiful view of the Chattahoochee River at Buford Dam. Picnic areas available, but gets very busy in the summer months. Fly fishing is popular here, and hiking.
