This is a recording studio from the fifties, where all the Iconic names of black music were recorded . Was established by the 2 Jewish brothers Phil and Leonard chess .The singers Muddy Waters, chuck Berry, Buddy guy, and the famous producer Willy Dixon are only few in the names .

It was a quite at the time of our visit so we had the guide all to ourselves. Lovely lady (can't remember her name). So much information to take in that i will have to go again. Really interesting history of the blues and music from that time. This place must be preserved to keep the music past in the present and for the future.

Visited here in November 2019. If your a blues fan this is an absolute must. The tour is set in the original chess records building and the staff were great when we there.
Our tour guide an ex pat from Manchester made it a very enjoyable experience and his passion for blues was evident.
This place should be top of the list for all blues fans visiting Chicago.

We had a great tour. This is a place that should be drawing more visitors. Our time spent there was fascinating, illuminating and entertaining. I'm so glad I went. There are opportunities for this place to become even better and more.... but it is supported by private donations and visitors... so if you love the blues, go!

Visited on Saturday afternoon Nov. 2. Our tour guide was a professional musician from Manchester. His enthusiasm was infectious and his knowledge was vast. As a fan of the Blues and R&R history it was a bucket list item for me but my son-in-law got quite a bit out of it as well so there's something for everyone. It's worth the time to go and they have a nice little gift shop with some great memorabilia spread throughout the venue. I made a small donation to the restoration of Studio B where some of the most iconic songs of our time were recorded, I hope that the successful artists of today will pitch in and make this happen. Thanks to the Dixon family for preserving this gem, it is a highlight of Chicago that they should promote much more!

This is an hour long tour led by a gent named Manchester....he is very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of Chess and the music created there. The space is historical and vibrant. You can close your eyes and imagine Etta James, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy or The Stones and a host of studio musicians walking around and recording there. Hopefully it will reopen as a working studio soon.. A Chicago gem!

This location is of immense importance, it's too bad the presentation isn't better. I was happy just to sit in the main studio and feel the vibe. It's surprisingly quite reverby, but, it has also increased in size, lengthwise by about 10 more feet than the original. No pictures allowed. Motown allows pictures, what's the big deal? Sadly, No original equipment to see. Shouldn't be too hard to find similar era equipment and make it look the same. The tour guide wants you to know that it is through Willy Dixon's altruism that the studio is here to help people. I have no idea what this means, or do I see any evidence of helping others achieve their musical goals. What's that all about anyway? Mentioned numerous times. Sigh.

Specifically went as we are blues fans and were overwhelmed by the most excellent tour and sampling of music; historical knowledge is abundant and the feeling that you are in the same place as so many fabulous musicians and esp. Willie Dixon. Brilliant.

I still can’t believe how hard it is to come across hardly anything when looking for Blues history in Chicago. I mean, CHICAGO BLUES is a whole sub-genre in its own right, right? Muddy Waters? Little Walter? Willie Dixon? Chuck Berry? You Name It? They all came to us through this very place, formerly home to Chess Producing Co., now turned into a foundation and managed by a handful of devotees which try very hard to punch above their weight. Their job is very hard, as they deal with conservation and promotion at the same time while relying only on donations.
The guided visit is a must, I just can’t imagine what this place would be like if associated, say, with the Smithsonian....

Visited before the Stones concert yesterday. What an inspiring place for a Rolling Stones fan, a blues fan, or any rock fan! The building is modest looking but its history is amazing.
The tour consists of a talk and listening session in the actual studio where the Stones recorded in the ‘60s, where Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry recorded all their hits (which is why the Stones recorded there). Etta James recorded At Last there. Although the studio can’t be used now the Willie Dixon Blues Heaven Foundation is trying to restore it to its state-of-the-art analog glory.
I’m so glad I went! The tour guide was wonderful and the gift shop has CDs and souvenirs.
