"Recently had an incredible round trip to Gangasagar with my parents. The island is a Hindu gem – clean, filled with helpful people, and adorned with beautiful temples and beaches. A three-hour drive unveiled the richness of the place. Highly recommend staying a night to truly soak in the experience. And for a delightful meal or coffee, don't miss Gaia Restaurant & Coffee Shop. As a business owner in Kathmandu, Nepal, I appreciate the essence of well-run establishments. 5/5 ⭐️ #GangasagarExperience #GaiaRestaurant"

We visited this most sought after pilgrimage location from Kolkata and stayed back one night at the West Bengal Tourism Guest House. Visited the world famous Kapil Muni Ashram during evening aarti and also the Sagar Beach, where River Ganges and Bay of Bengal meets and sprinkled the holy water during high tide. Local totos took us around this island and we visited number of temples including Sri Ramakrishna Math! The journey across the water stretch was mesmerising!

Sare tirath bar-bar Gangasagar Ek baar. Its an island in bay of Bengal in south 24 pargana district near Haldiya doc and Kakdwip , less developed , economy based on agriculture and tourism which is underdeveloped having very less facilities , facilities are limited to Gangasagar Fair timings in december to 20th Jan primarily at Makar Sankranti i.e. at 14 th Jan every year. Wish it be developed as not only as spiritual destination but a tourist destination as well.

We started at 8.20 am on Saturday from Ruby Hospital in Kolkata East, reached Kakdwip by 12 pm. Google showed three routes, we took joka, aamtala route. Met another person in ferry at Kakdwip, who also started from Ruby at 9.30 am and reached at 12 pm, he took some internal route again suggested by Google maps coming via Baraipur.

We enquired about ferrying our car as well to Sagar, but the water was low, the locals shared it's advisable to reach by 10 am, as that's the most probable time when ferry taking cars cross for sure, if one wants to take own car.

We took the normal steamer, which ferries every 40 odd minutes, per ticket fare is Rs 9 from Kakdwip to Sagar. Takes about 30 - 40 minutes to cross. Then u get private autos and car. A 7 seater car costs Rs 1600, electric autos 7 seater again cost Rs 1200, and there is a bus as well. Takes about 30 - 40 minutes for 30 km journey, road is good but narrow.

Then from the auto stand, at Gangasagar, the ganga sagar sea where one has to take the dip is almost 1 km by walking, there is a provision to board auto for Rs 40 each as well, as we were 6 of us, ( we met another family at the Sagar Auto stand negotiating with the electric auto guy, hence joined them), and wanted to avoid the heavy presence of beggars.

Gangasagar sea ghat was a wow, neat n clean. We immediately changed n took a dip. There is provision for chairs @ Rs 20 each, place to change clothes @Rs 20 each for ladies, pandit for Pooja Rs 50 to 100, rice @Rs 10 a pack to donate n beggars, photographers charging Rs 50 for an instant print. But make sure u manage them well. Coz the nob keep increasing.

We then immediately moved back to Kapil Muni park, had our lunch, we were carrying from home. Took the electric auto back which we have hired, took the ferry at 4.45 pm, luckily waiting for us. Took our car from the parking n drove back home

For whatever reasons, state govt has kept basic facilities at Lot 8 really primitive and there is zero management at both ends. I can well imagine the kind of problems pilgrims must be facing during annual pilgrimage in the month of Jan.

As place it is a holy place for all Hindus. Here Ganga merge into sea. You will get tremendous peace in you while you were here. For the place I will give 5 star rating BUT a BIG BUT 2 star for the arrangement, for the mismanagement, for the trouble one have to face. Government of Kolkata is not paying a single attention towards the place.

Cons
1. The steamer : the worst and horrible, if you are luxury type travel or you are with small kids then please DO NOT GO. The steamer is pathetic like local trains. All local with their 2 wheeler, bunches of vegetables, people smoke on your face and ready to fight on the objection. Simply not made for tourists. You will die / nausea due to over crowded, extream humidity, and dehydration.
2. Food: you will not get anything hygienic to eat. You have to carry for your self.
3. Water: you will not get original packed water. The packed water you will get is locally tap water. So avoid if you do not want to get sick. Take at least 3 bottle / person due to High humidity.
4. Taxi : from steamer port to Gangasagar you again require taxi. The drivers are ready to cheat you. They over charge you, the take the money for A/C but the A/C will be deffective. Before finalizing the cab check the A/C first. Also on return hire the taxi for naamkhana. Coz you will not get return steamer before 5:00pm from this port(LTC). The approx charges would be RS. 1800.00 LTC to Gangasagar and from there to naamkhana. PLEASE DO NOT PAY IN ADVANCE OR AT MIDDLE OF JOURNEY. If you pay the cab driver will leave you there and you will not anything for return from Gangasagar
6. Long traffic jam: If you are returning in the evening from Gangasagar to Kolkata then you will stuck at Diamond Harbor traffic jam due to wholesale fish market which block the road for hours.

Pros:
1. Holy place with alot of peace.
2. Vast sea mixed with Ganga jal.

Please do not
1 if you are having kids with you. As you will not want to them to suffer.
2. If you have heat stroke problem
3. If you cannot be without A/C / bear the hot environment
4. If you are sensitive towards outside food & water.

Enjoy the scenic beauty of island and consolidate all the Tirthas end to the feet of Ganga (river The Ganges) meeting to Bay of Bengal. Kapil muni Ashram a great religious place must to every one for puja. In this island a round trip to Ban Bibi temple, Bharat sevashram Sangha, Ramakrishna mission, light House etc. The local small hotels serve you the fresh and tasty lunch, dinner and tiffin. No regd. Hotels available, may stay in Bharat sevashram, local small private cottage or state govt. Lodges. Best way to go there by own/rented car from Kolkata, car ferried by big launch and journey will be smooth without any tension to available local autos, ferries and train timings. From main land the journey after ferry is 30 kms to reach Pick of island at Kapil muni Ashram. Very good place for everyone . Avoid rainy season.

It’s a island known for mythological reasons. Reaching there is not very easy- the road journey from Kolkata is around 2 hrs and then another 45 mins through small jetty. There are regular jetty which connects the island govt and private jetty both are available...the main landmark is the place were everyone takes a dip in the holy backwaters with a temple near it. It’s advisable to start early morning from Kolkatta as the place receives thousand of devotees every day.

The Natural beauty is very nice, apart from the pilgrimage, the whole Island has a lot of potential to be developed as a peaceful place to relax as well. Travel Infrastructure, Roads are good, while hotels, restaurants are very basic. A good ferry service exists from Kolkata. The WB Govt Food Court near the temple offers only basic Bengali lunch items, whereas such big infrastructure can provide a greater variety of cuisine for tourists, that is expected.

Resting places, shade and better toilet facilities must be provided at beaches apart from the one near temple.

Overall a very nice place, could be far better with a little more planning. Govt spending a lot of money, but lack of planning.

I stayed at this island for two days and took bath on both the days, One can get a plastic chair at cost of Rs20 ,to put clothes and bags on it to avoid wetting from sea water, A makeshift cloth changing enclosure is available for ladies at the cost of Rs20./- This place bit dirty and you may see cows and dogs roaming at places.Any how it main importance is as Hindu-Mahatirth.
