We planned this visit from Spiti, kaza. The road was terrible to this place, Himachal Pradesh should be shameful for this bad maintenance of their road infrastructure, i suggest everyone not to go to this place, No network in this area, you ll be feeling trapped in this area.

'Tso Chigma ' or Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon)...has a peripheral 'parikrama' of 4 km which is worth walking around , as at every step one gets to see amazingly different views of the lake , surrounding mountains and of the reflection of the mountains in the crystal clear , calm and steady water of the lake .Located at 14100 feet , this high altitude lake surely is ' number one ' attraction of this incredibly beautiful area . Do spend every hour from dawn to dusk here as every minute its a amazingly different spectacle .

Chandratal lake is one of the best attraction on your spiti valley tour .You need to cross the high passes( Kunzum Pass) and rough roads to reach to the base camps. The lake is 15-20 minutes walk from car parking. You need to take water bottle, food from camp itself as there is no shop in Chandratal lake.
In Night it become very cold and even pipe water get frozen and you need to use bucket for water usages.

At more than 14000 feet, Chandra Taal is pristine and unspoilt lake, located in the middle of nowhere !

Beautiful pitstop enroute Kaza.

The lake is around an hours drive from Chacha Chachi da Dhaba, along the Chenab river and grainy terrain.
Once you reach a parking area, it takes another 10-15 mins walk to the lake.
As you walk along this path, the views are breathtaking!

The lake is larger than it seems and most people trek along the front end of the lake. Walking around the lake give you a different perspective altogether :)

The water is icy cold and one can take a dip in the shallow area.
There might be a few other lakes with the colorful beauty and unique landscape of Chandrataal Lake.

We weren't able to stay here, but the experience overnight with crystal clear skies is truly one of a kind.

The best part of spiti valley is its still quite unspoilt due to the remote nature of most of it’s attractions.
Chandrtal lake is one of them, you need to cross the high passes water streams and extremely rough roads to reach to the base camps. The lake is another 15 minutes trek from the parking lot, dont expect any shops/eateries out there it’s quite a no mans land you are totally cut off from the outside world here.
The camps are setup few kilometers away form the lake, but are worth staying at. The night we stayed at chandrtal we experienced snowfall.

Chandratal lake is at 3340 metres above sea level. Normally all tour operators and tourists wish for overnight camp stay.
Experience of staying in the camp may be thrilling for those who never ever been to any camping.
One has to start AMS sickness tablets (Diamox or so) at least 48 hrs. Prior to coming to high altitude areas. Moreover, diabetic personnel are restricted to consume AMS tabs (better check with your own doctor).
Let me explain in brief. First, its advisable only for those, who can breath well in such a high altitude. Very few camps (2 / 3) provide complete facilities, mainly oxygen facilities during an emergency.
Oxygen refilling plant is at Kaza. And camp personnel get oxygen refilled from Kaza.
Now, how can one know, the quantity previous tourist has consumed? and how much oxygen is remained in the bottle? Even, camp personnel also don't know, no such measuring unit or meter.
Its difficult, in case if cylinder is found empty during emergency. So, please double check with camp personnel.
All camps are almost 2 kms away from the Chandratal car parking area (not the lake). The trek starts from the parking point, from where the lake is further, about 1.5 – 2 kms. trek.
Govt. has restricted about 2 kms. area around the lake as a no camp zone. So, no camp is nearby or close to the lake. If some camp owners claim, they are telling white lie. Its my personal experience.
No so called, goody goody romantic tent placed near the lake (its only in bollywood films, playing guitar on lake shore, here your strings will be torn) in a chilly weather.
Rest is up to you, better get an experience.
Personally, my suggestion not to stay at Chandratal lake, but of course, visit the lake, enjoy the tracking and either move to Manali or Kaza for stay and overall safety.

The word Tal means lake in Hindi so saying Chandratal should be enough if said in Hindi. The lake is situated at a height of over 4300 M or over 14000 feet. The site is accessible only from May to September. We had planned to stay overnight but Himachal Police advised our group of Sr. Citizen couple not to stay overnight because the temperatures were expected to drop below -5 deg Centigrade. No medical is available at site in case someone develops breathing problem at 13000 feet height.
But two hours spent there were as if in heaven in peace. I can only imagine the joy described by other reviewers gazing at clean sky full of stars.

Far away from the hustle bustle life of the city’s. This place really justifies the feel of “In the middle of nowhere’.
The Moon Lake - Chandrataal, a lake situated in high altitude, hidden between the Mountains of Himalayan Range in Himachal Pradesh, Which is one such beautiful lakes in between those mountains. The lake gets its name Chandra Taal, which means “The Moon Lake” in Hindi. Mountains reflection in the lake makes the lake look more stunning.
A lake situated at approximately 13500ft above sea level. The lake has many legends associated with it and one can feel and experience each of them as you approach the lake.

I went to Chandratal Lake. A camper and trekker's paradise, Chandratal Lake is often referred to as one of the most beautiful lakes located at an altitude of about 4300 m in the mighty Himalayas. It is great place to go.

Above 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas Mountains I found my home Chandratal lake.
The name originated from it's crescent shape. It overlooks the Chandratal river. It's one of the hidden attraction of Himachal Pradesh of India. Situated in the Lahul & Spiti district of Himachal.

Chandra Taal is a tourist destination for trekkers and campers. You can go by foot from Batal as well as from Kunzum Pass. Though I had my most adventures SOLO ROAD TRIP going there by a four-wheeler.And Almighty only know how that all happend( P.S.Theres a motor road accessible as far as a parking lot 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from the lake).

Accommodation is available 5 kilometres from the lake. Vast meadows on the banks of the lake are used as camping sites. I stayed at one of the camps under the MILKY WAY ( literally) on a July night .

This trek ,this ride is one of the most difficult difficult one in Himachal,Himalays. At times it did feel an gonna make it because of the road, landslide, cloudburst and the weather. But I can guarantee as a Solo Female Traveler to all the travelers...it's worth giving a try. No one will regret it. No one ever did. All you will have an enchanting & tantalizing memory for ever.

I did find my peace here. 😌

I have traveled through desserts,
I have traveled through the sea.
And here in the mountains;
I stand...
Where my home is going to be.
