It's an old monastery. Inside the Monastery it's very dark. It's on an uphill, and you need to climb for around 10-15 minutes to get to the Main Monastery. There's a shop outside the Monastery which has souvenirs. It was very windy when we visited the place.

A very big monastery in kaza. You need to walk a bot from parking place to reach inside. They have abig prayer hall and meditation caves as well. From terrace you will see a very beautiful full valley view.

A must visit in Kaza.
Key Monastery is perched at a hill top, and looks like an out of the ordinary structure surrounded by barren mountains.
One is welcomed with a calm and serene environment.
We were unaware, but one could stay at the monastery for around Rs.200 a night - would have been an amazing opportunity but we were hard pressed for time.
The top of the monastery allows a 180 degrees view of the amazing mountains, river along the side, and unseen landscapes !

One should definitely visit Key monastery from inside. It is different from other monasteries. To reach key monastery you have to walk a little from the parking space. It is a 5-7min walk till the main old gompa which houses hundreds year old paintings and prayer wheel still exists. Next visit meditation caves where monks sit for hours to practice meditation in silence. These meditation caves were not seen elsewhere. Going further up on terrace you will see the most beautiful view from the monastery top of the whole valley. The view is breath taking.

Possibly you have seen this structure on TV at some point in life.
The facade looks fantastic as it sits on a mountain top, the view from the top of the monastery is breathtaking as you look over the Spiti Valley and the mountains around.
You are greeted well by the monks as they show you around the monastery, and the different rooms. You are welcomed by a warm tea and some snacks.
We were lucky to walk in during a prayer session and it was absolutely divine.
A must visit!

This place is amazing and give peace to your mind and calms your soul. You definitely dont want to go back from here. When we reached here it was cold and winds were blowing, as soon we reach inside the gompa a monk saw us shivering and offered us hot tea with conversation. We got to know alot about this place from that monk. It's the famous monastery in Spiti valley and is amazing site to watch

This place is iconic, serene, beautifully calm and relaxing, there are meditation Chambers created really a long while ago, there a school near it, there are a lot of monks, functions, just a lot of things that would make you feel relaxed, calm and composed. You should definitely meditate here for a while, there are monks guide and tell about the history of the place that really fascinating (they speak multiple languages) do have the herbal tea that they offer, do make a donation as a good will. Photography at certain points is prohibited so please respect that. Do talk to the monks they'll tell you all about the amazing history of Key monastery.
Also, there is a spot where you can hike to and get an amazing view of the monastery with the whole valley, it's a 15-20 mins hike, I'll share the photos as well.

The Monastery has some really beautiful scriptures & paintings of Lord Buddha & other Gods. The Key Gompa is also famous for its priceless collection of ancient Thangkas including Tibetian silk Thangkas upto 800 yrs old & frescos depicting the life of Padmasambhava. There is a Key village that just comes before the Key monastery. The views from vantage point are breathtaking from where you can view Rangrik village across Spiti river

This is by far the largest monastery in Spiti. The monks are so hospitable and warm. With a cute terrace and gallant views of the Spiti Valley, sipping hot herbal tea, in their kitchen, was a bonus.
