We visited most of the villages as we birded Van Buren County. We had beautiful weather to enjoy the nature settings and the towns' historic homes and buildings. Each village had something unique and memorable. The birding was pretty good and undisturbed by noise or other aspects of "modern America."

This was my first time attending the annual October Scenic Drive Festival in the Villages of VB County. The rural scenery and country life were both refreshing. Many of the towns in the area were celebrating with fun family activities. A must in the area would be the Dutchman's Store in Cantril, IA, which contained a large selection of Amish goods. There were many majestic old barns and historical buildings to see and visit along the tour. The Des Moines river displayed its' untamed majesty along many of the small towns in the area, making one realize how important the river would have been to those early communities.

We managed to get to all of the villages in one day including stops at a harvest farm in Donnelson, a couple of general stores, and three wineries without being in a rush or a hurry. Some villages are almost non existent, but the scenery is pure Iowa and the Amish attractions are a nice change of pace.

Keep in mind that anything Amish closes on Sunday.

Planned a last-minute trip and shouldn’t have. The “villages” are actually pretty rundown tiny towns. Bonaparte was particularly disappointing. Really tired community with abandoned storefronts. There’s nothing to do, and very little to see. The Bonaparte Retreat restaurant (which was highly recommended by an employee at the visitor center in Keosauqua) was mediocre at best. Bentonsport was a bit more interesting...the bridge is worth a look, the antique shop was open. The Dutchman’s Store in Cantril is unique and worth the drive if you’ve never been to String Town Grocery near Kalona. Never checked out Keosauqua...the woman in the tourism office there pointed us to attractions everywhere else! Should’ve skipped Bonaparte instead. We did enjoy the American Gothic house in Eldon (not one of the “official” villages), however it was undergoing some renovation, so it was less than we had hoped to see. Will go back for photo opps when it’s back together. Won’t, however, return to the “ghost towns” of Van Buren County. There are far better places in Iowa to visit.

Dear Blandboy, I'm so sorry to hear you were disappointed with your visit to our Villages! I'll admit, our tiny, quiet historic Villages are not for everyone. If you're looking for bustling activities, strip malls and exquisite cuisine...or stop lights and fast food, you won't find them in Van Buren County with one exception, we have over-the-top bustling activities during our Scenic Drive Festival in October! :) However, if you're looking for a quiet getaway with locally-owned businesses, resident artisans, B&B's, Cabins, numerous historic sites and ample outdoor recreation...camping, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, etc. then Van Buren County is your place! Unfortunately, as with many rural communities, we do have several empty storefronts in our Villages. Our communities try hard to get new businesses in them and Bonaparte has succeeded with two of their storefronts. Last fall, 2 new Antique Stores opened on Main St. in Bonaparte. I hope you had the chance to visit them! They have also had great success with recruiting new businesses to locate in the former elementary school buildingthat has been repurposed into retail and office space. I apologize for our Villages not meeting your expectations. I do hope you continue to travel in Iowa because there are many, many amazing places, to satisfy all interests, throughout our state! Best Regards, Stacey Reese Executive Director

My friend and I stopped at the Visitor Center/Museum in Keosauqua and had a really nice tour or the Museum. The woman working there was really helpful, giving us maps and coupons for the Villages of Van Buren County and tips on good places to eat and how to get the most scenic drive.

We came for the Fall Festival held the 2nd week of October. On the plus side was the meal at the Amish Farm, a tour of the historic sale barn and the church meal we had at Milton. On the minus side: Pearson House was locked even when the brochure said it would be open, so we didn’t get to see it, the Keosauqua Visitor Center wasnt open over the biggest weekend of the year, villages were shabby, unkept. People were nice but not much community pride for the influx of visitors they knew were coming.

Oh boy, we are so sorry you experienced such disappointment during your visit! Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn't cooperate with us and the terrible rainy cold weather did impact some scheduled events/activities. But on the bright side of things, we're happy to hear that you did have a little bit of fun! 😊

We had a wonderful time in the area but it began poorly. We booked at Looker Retreat. Unable to find, as pic not one on site. No signage and address did not match. Poor housekeeping. Things not cleaned up after those before us. When owner contacted, nothing they could do as they were 100 miles away. At 6:30 on Thursday night, we had to go shop for lodging for 4 ladies for 3 nights. Praise God for Red Fox Lodging. They took us in, gave us a great rate and made a bad situation laughable. We spent the next 3 days loving the area. We have researched and all the other info in the Visitor's guide is true. We may be coming back sooner than later thanks to Red Fox Lodging and the lady at the Visitor's Center who forwarded our concerns on.

Oh my! We are SO sorry you had such a terrible experience with this lodging facility! We are contacting Looker Retreat about this issue immediately. Hopefully, it won't happen to anyone else! We are very thankful and happy to hear that Red Fox Lodging was able to accommodate you and you ended up having a great weekend!

Excellent community to visit with lots of historic stops to see. Definitely come down in October for Scenic Drive Festival! Lots of crafts, family friendly activities and scenery (do a drive through the state park). You won't regret it!

I was lucky enough to grow up in Keosauqua Iowa where my father was the county veterinarian. I remember when I was in grade school each spring our school class would go and visit the museums and restored homes of historic Van Buren County. Today, as an adult I enjoy returning to these same places and I still learn something new each time. I highly recommend visiting these quaint, time preserved villages.

This does not have a review yet..... It is a great place to go too and see a home setting in the 1800's the two guides were very knowledgeable about the house. It is a house believed to be on the under ground railway route you get to see the hiding place of the slaves.
The room set up is great it feels like the occupants have only just left the room. Lots of artifacts to see. History of the original owners is also very good to find out about.
