Lower River or Upper Mtn. Trails...or a rest by the Outside Fire Pitt? It's all FUN here!
janv. 2021
Welcome to the Carter family's hidden gem in the lovely lil' mtn. town of Bethel, Maine.
Located in the Oxford foothills of the NH Presidential range, just 15 mins from Sunday River Ski Resort, an hour from Bates College in Lewiston and 90 mins from Portland.
If it's outdoor fun (& exercise), you're looking for, then this is the place!
They really do offer "something for everyone", including Discounted Senior Passes AND Doggie Day Passes.
You can rent or bring your own equipment and hop onto their nicely groomed or bk. country paths for multi-use X-Ctry Skiing, Snow Shoeing, Sleds & Fat Bikes.
They offer all levels & types of well marked trails.
Just pick up a map in the cozy ski lodge (there's a restroom & retail shop), and get all your questions and needs fulfilled by this knowledgeable and friendly family crew of outdoor enthusiasts!

Great trails, great atmosphere, super knowledgable ski equipment advice
janv. 2021
We recently drove up to the Carter's XC center (3 hours from Southern New Hampshire) in search of deeper snow and a great network of trails. I was also looking for advice on a new set of skis to supplement my performance classic skis upon which I was having a tough time handling in the typical icy, early winter snow conditions with ungroomed or skate ski only trails.

Jes at the Ski Shop helped me over email and the phone to understand the differences between touring and performance classic skis and prepared a pair of Rossignol OT 65 touring skis for me, complete with a hot waxing so they were ready to go.

I absolutely loved the skis, loved the trails around the center, and together with my wife had a great time. We are coming back for more days of XC skiing while our kids ski downhill over at Sunday River. Could not be happier with the advice, the COVID safety and friendliness of the shop, and to have a source of XC skiing with real snow.

Excited to try some lessons next time too!

Thank you!

Day of skiing.
févr. 2020
First time at this location. The trails near the lodge were in excellent condition and well groomed.
The trails on the intermediate side were not well groomed. Either way nice location and lots of room to ski.
Pleasant folks and great price.

Great for Snowshoeing
févr. 2020
It was a warm and sunny day in Bethel, Maine when I arrived at Carter's to snowshoe. I had my own equipment, and experience. I got a senior trail pass for ten bucks, and the woman in the lodge mapped out a few trails I might like. Some go up onto the mountain, others are somewhat flat and go through the woods and along the Androscoggin River. I was glad that I was snowshoeing, as the snow was soft and looked sticky. With my snowshoes, I was able to climb up into the woods on the hill, and then traipse around the pasture and through the woods. There is a lodge with restrooms and I think snacks, but I had my own coffee and dark chocolate to enjoy. I did speak with several cross country skiers who were enjoying the trails around the pasture and although they were not zipping around they were content with the perfectly groomed trails and the splendid weather.

Great price for a great experience
mars 2017 • Entre amis
I visited Sunday River with a group of friends and wanted to try cross country skiing. None of us brought equipment but Carter's made this experience possible. They had everything necessary (different XC ski options, boots in every size, poles) for rent at a reasonable price ($15-20) and an inexpensive trail pass ($15). The trails were gorgeous and great for beginners. For $30 you could have a full day of fun.

I would recommend calling them before your visit to check on timing. I don't think the times that google shows are accurate.

No experience necessary! If you are new, I would pay the extra $5 for the steel edged skis.

Not great customer service when it counted.
févr. 2016 • En famille
My family and I rented cross country skis and headed up the hill by car to the "mountain" trails. I explained to the gentleman that all others with me were new to cross country and I wanted them to enjoy it so they would come with me again. The outfitting part went smoothly. Unfortunately, my son ended up with skis that weren't waxed, but by the time we realized it the whole crew was half way up the first big hill. So, he dug in and spent the next 2 hours working like crazy on the skis. When we got back to the shop I mentioned the ski issue to the owner whose response was, "I told you to come back if there were issues." Watching his wife, it was clear that she was shocked we received this unwaxed skis and suggested that those skis not get placed with all the others. I was disappointed that we didn't even get a "I am so sorry, that should not have happened." It wasn't until my husband straggled out behind the rest of us (after taking a pit stop) that they offered another visit. Well, needless to say that was not going to happen....I would never get my son back there. I always say, proof of great customer service isn't when all is going well, it is the response when things don't go perfectly. I am very disappointed.

Dear Stacy, We are very sorry to hear about your experience here and can understand why you were not happy with your rental. We have an extensive rental fleet and try our best to tailor rental setups to meet each skier's needs. Most of the time, our rentals are a great fit, but very rarely, we do make a mistake. We are always happy to swap out skis, boots, or poles if there are any problems with any rental equipment - although it sounds like this wasn't a practical option for your group. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience this caused you, and we hope that your future adventures in cross county skiing are more enjoyable.

Well groomed trails
févr. 2016 • En couple
We went for snow shoeing, and was able to go along all trails, plus additional trails. The groomer was out while we were out. If we just had more snow, these trails would have been pristine. I would definitely go back, and recommend it to friends.

Thanks for the feedback! The snow has been feast or famine, and the rain and wild temperature swings have created challenges of their own for grooming, but we've been doing our best to keep the trails in good shape. It certainly beats last winter, so it's tough to complain! Hope to see you out on the trails for some spring skiing!

Great snow, friendly helpful owners

We skied the lower trails through woods and along the river and fields. Beautiful scenery and great cover given limited recent snow fall. Owners are helpful and friendly. Can't wait to return to check out mountain trails.

We're glad you were able to explore our lower trail systems, and we hope you'll have the opportunity to return and hit the mountain! The view - and descent - are well worth the climb.

Wonderful family owned and operated XC Ski center!
janv. 2016 • En couple
My husband and I have been cross skiing at Carter's for several years now. It is owned and operated by a local family in which various members have lived and farmed the area for several generations. They truly care about their ski business. The ski trails provide something for everyone from beginners to more seasoned skiers. The scenery is varied from trails out in the pasture and along the Androscoggin River to wooded hillsides where there is open section that provides a wonderful straight-on view of Sunday River ski mountain. Another bonus is that the ski center is dog-friendly.

View from the top is worth the climb!
mars 2015 • En couple
Great afternoon of cross-country skiing on a warm spring day! Rentals available at the Lodge but we brought our own. Trail fee was $15 per person. We took the Wiley Farm Trail, which winds up a mountain on an old road through pines and birches to a scenic overlook. (There are also easier trails that go through woods and fields by the river.) The snow was very soft that day so climbing was not hard; it would be more difficult in icy conditions. Great views of Sunday River from the top and well worth the climb. There's a cabin at the top with a picnic table where you can have your lunch. The owner of the cabin came out and sat with us and we enjoyed talking with him. Very generous of him to share this beautiful spot with X-C skiers.
