I took a look at the beach while walking the trail. I didn't stop. Clearly, no one would travel to Portland for the sake of this beach. However, some families were sitting on the beach and somebody was swimming in the water. Apropos previous comments about a "dog beach," I noticed a sign saying that dogs are currently forbidden during the summer months for most of the day. I saw no dogs.

It’s a nice beach for kids to run around, collect rocks, throw things in the water, splash around. There’s few people here because of the rocky beach, mostly for strolling around.

The beach might as well be a dog beach. The trail is nice, though, and the views are fantastic. The public restroom situation seems to have gotten than recent years.

Amazing photo opportunities along the water. Splendid views of colorful clouds at sunset. And who expected a beach (albeit modest) in Maine???

we had a lovely day to walk this trail but the beach didn't look too inviting in my opinion. We did the trail at the start of the train and ended at a parking lot near a grocery store. Not being familiar with the area, we were't sure where we were but we loved following the water and seeing the yachts.

The trail itself along the beach isn't bad, but the strand of beach is pitiful -- usually full of dogs and their 'leavings', horrible bathroom facilities overflowing with trash and floors covered in pee. It's unbelievable that a beautiful and popular park like Eastern Promenade has such terrible bathrooms, especially seeing that there are 5-6 food trucks. Good thing there are porta-potties, at least. I heard that the bathrooms are supposed to be renovated and monitored this summer. I hope so.

This city beach has become a public health menace. The narrow strand of sand itself is abused all day and every day as a toilet for leashed and unleashed packs of dogs whose owners rarely clean up after them. The nearby public rest facilities are a parody of sanitation where unusable toilets overflow with trash. The facilities themselves are camouflaged in a psychotic color palette entirely out of touch with their natural setting. Mindless graffiti scar nearly every available surface at the beach. Parking is in paved lots or along an access road where skateboarders roll downhill among moving and parked vehicles alike. As part of a public park, this beach on Casco Bay has become the very last place travelers should ever bother to visit.

Locals do not recommend swimming here! We have been told that water from the outer parts of the Casco Bay, where cruise ships and other mega yachts tend to offload gray water (and sometime sewage) tends to wash in this direction.

It's a little hard to get onto if you're handicapped, but there are some wonderful views and a great place to sit.

This no-cost public beach on Casco Bay stretched about 900 feet (274 m) along the base of Portland’s Eastern Promenade. At high tide, it was a narrow strip of clean sand; as the tide ebbed, it became broader and exposed beach cobbles as well as sand. Nearby was a public boat-launch. At an early hour, the entire beach was overrun with unleashed dogs. Even though there was plenty of sand for sunbathers, the dog owners had made it all their own. Among beach amenities were fairly clean rest facilities and mowed park lawns suitable for picnics. City-posted signs explained local pandemic protocols. Parking was in clearly marked paved lots. While I liked the beach itself and its facilities, I’ll look elsewhere for a feces-free stretch of sand before I walk barefoot on the strand.

Where are the beaches near Portland, not including East End Beach?
Rédigé le 4 mars 2017
Casco Bay which surrounds Portland itself is a Commercial and Cruise Ship area with limited beaches. There is a bikepath/walkway that surrounds the Portland waterfront from the bottom of Franklin St to the base of the Eastern Promenade. I have seen occasional sun bathers there but is is a bit rocky with no real privacy or wide open sandy beaches, lots of dogs though! If you travel about 7 miles south to Two Lights State Park you can view and climb on the rocky cliffs that are so very typical of the rugged Maine coastline.
For sandy swim-able beaches you would need to go to Crescent Beach State Park about 8 miles southwest from Portland in Cape Elizabeth off of Rte #77. Also a great spot for dogs too as well as views of the fishing boats coming and going.
Or you can go further southwest about 20 miles from Portland to Old Orchard Beach which is a virtual summer playground with miles of beaches, hotels, seasonal rentals, restaurant, small amusement and water slide park and all of the summer honky tonk you can imagine!
Or if you head inland by about 35-40 miles you will find the Lakes Region with the second largest lake in Maine, Sebago Lake, along with a number of lake of all sizes. Also with lots of seasonal rentals, short and long term and local conveniences such as groceries, gas, restaurants and entertainment. Lots of water sports to enjoy in the Lakes Region too! Hope this helps? Where ever you choose to land, enjoy your days in Maine!
