You have a little hike through the woods to get to the top of the Log Slide Overlook. There is a little uphill in the sand, so that could be a little tough for some. I was a bit surprised by how steep it was. It was a gorgeous view though.
You can take one of the paths through the grasses up a little higher and get a cool look over at the Au Sable Lighthouse (which we had just hiked to). If you do that, do a tick check after. Your stop here probably won't be over an hour.

Very beautiful park with gorgeous views and lots of sand dunes. Stay away from the edge - it's $2000 if you need to be rescued

Fantastic views of Lake Superior. Our group enjoyed the walk, the view and the ease of taking on the Sable Falls in the same day.

When you actually see this, it doesn't really look all that different than any sand dune, but the history of it is very cool!

Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! You can see for miles! To climb down did look fun but I however did not go down to the water as it would be a difficult climb back up with bad knees!! It’s a trek back up but there were people doing it. Definitely a must see!

The views here are amazing and it is an easy hike from the parking lot out to the dune. There are several trails off either side that provide even more panoramic views and if you take the left path, you'll be treated to a wonderful view of the Au Sable Lighthouse!

**Note there is nothing stopping anyone from running down the dune all the way to the lake, but if you do, BE PREPARED for a very physical hike back up which could take an hour or more depending on your physical condition.

This was first close up exposure to Lake Superior. I saw more impressive views later, but this was my first and therefore memorable.

We did not go down by the lake but chose to view it from above.

The hike was short and easy.

Parking was sufficient including RV/trailer parking.

This was one of many highlights during our visit to the U.P. and to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in particular. While the national lakeshore is named for the multi-hued sandstone cliffs further east the massive Grand Sable dunes are an equally iconic part of this area.

Why “Log Slide”? In the late 19th Century the Upper Peninsula was subjected to extensive clear cut logging, the lumber being used to build the growing major cities of the Midwest. The log slide was a large wooden chute from the top of the dunes to the water where the logs would be collected and loaded onto ships for transport to the sawmills. There is a shed containing a large-wheeled cart and sled used to transport these logs of white pine and cedar. The logs reportedly took just 10 seconds to descend the 300 feet, sometime generating enough friction with the chute to catch fire on their way down. The chute was abandoned when the region was timbered out and the lumberjacks moved further west.

The Grand Sable Dunes are a 5-mile length of imposing sand dunes rising 300 feet above Lake Superior stretching from just west of Grand Marais to just east of the Au Sable lighthouse. The Log Slide area is perhaps the most accessible part with the parking lot just a short walk away from the top of the dunes. There was once an overlook platform but now you have to walk to edge for the view of the rest of the dunes to the east and the Au Sable on the west. The sand is fine and difficult to walk on.

The side of the dune is steep and many visitors cannot resist the temptation of making the descent and the challenge of coming back up. A sign warns that while the descent can take just minutes, the ascent could take one hour. The descent is not too bad, just be conscious of others coming up as you will be scattering and and stones downhill and potentially onto their heads. The ascent is a tough one with the steep angle of the slope and the soft sand combining to make each step a battle as your feet slide back half the distance you just climbed. Feel free to use your hands to help you scramble up.

Honestly was my favorite spot in our U.P. trip. Wasn’t very crowded at all & the views were just breathtaking. Pictures don’t do justice.
