This pier was built by the convicts in 1839, some effort with leg irons on, and has certainly seen some action since as it was the main port for the unloading of people and supplies for the colony.
Nowadays it appears to be the main wharf for where the fishing boats and official Government boats dock. There is a crane at the end of the pier that lifts the boats out of the water and when you see all of the sharks hanging about you can understand why no one uses the slipway.
We passed by here a couple of times and were lucky enough on each occasion to see the fisherman unloading and cleaning their catch, throwing what was not wanted into the water where about a dozen sharks fought each other for the scraps.
We stood and peered very carefully and exceedingly apprehensively over the edge of the pier. Great care needed to be taken as there was no guard rail and you would not survive the shark feeding frenzy if you slipped and fell in.

Kingston Pier, is of course in Kingston, Norfolk Island. A minute or so walk from the convict era hospital ruins, or stairs going up to Flagstaff lookout. There's rumored to be a ghost who hangs around one of the boat ruins next to the pier. Also supposedly you can see a lot of sharks (as you can at the only other pier on the Island Cascade Pier) but the ocean was pretty rough the day I walked here so I didn't see any. I think the best time to see the sharks at either pier is when the fishing boats come in. Was interesting to watch the waves come over the pier though. Sorry only took videos of that, also there's a stairs section which the waves fill up. Under the big hook that obviously is crucial in unloading the supplies for the island.
In the immediate vicinity are some old boats, some convict buildings, one has a small museum where you can buy cold drinks and in wrappers type ice creams. That is incidentally the only place you'll find to buy food in Kingston while walking around. It takes around half an hour to reach the pier from Burnt Pine on foot. Longer going back as that way is uphill. But it's not that difficult, you definitely don't need to rent a car to get here, or to get around Norfolk Island.

Just a beautiful location out to the ocean and the stunning landscape. Would definitely recommend travelling to Norfolk Island.

A gorgeous area to have a wander around and read up on the historical buildings and the working pier. Also very close to the ocean where you can have a dip if the weather is warm enough. Parking is also very close and nearby.

A feature of the island.
Not much activity when we were there as there hadn't been a supply ship for some months - and there were no fishing charters on the days we went down.
But it was still a good place to visit and part of the whole historical area

An unassuming but significant feature of the island. Not only in it's history, but how it plays such a large role in the islands survival with the arrival of supplies etc. New barges arrived by ship during our visit and half the island turned our to watch them being brought ashore. No ship can actually come ashore so all supplies have to be offloaded out at sea and brought ashore to this jetty. The islanders have always used long boats to do this until the arrival of these new barges. We found ourselves drawn to going down each day to just see what was happening at the wharf.

The pier is an original structure, still used when ships deliver goods to the island. The area around the pier is worth a visit, particularly the nearby building maintained by the Lions Clubs. The historical photos inside and the Lions' bannerettes are excellent. A gold coin donation at the door.

The pier is right in the heart of the Kingston Historic Area and surrounded by historical buildings. A word of warning - do not swim on the eastern side of the Pier. Large sharks circle around looking for a cheap feed from local fishermen. Swimming on the western side (Slaughter / Emily Bay) is safe because of the protection from the reef.

Not a huge pier but its operations are the most interesting aspect of the pier. Make sure to visit when boats are being launched, or retrieved, to fully understand how it is different here.
