Having read about Lewis & Clark's expedition I was very excited to see a physical remnant of their time in this area. It's amazing to me that this Clark's signature has survived all these years, and even more amazing to me to find out that the monument just came into the national park system in 2001! Prior to that it was privately owned, and I appreciate the owners who protected this piece of history for so long!
Pompey's Pillar NM is easy to find and most definitely worth a stop. They have a great visitor's center and the walk out to the pillar is easy. There are stairs, but there are benches along the way to take a break if needed. Clark's signature is about 1/3 of the way up and you can take the stairs the rest of the way to the top of the pillar for wonderful views.
I appreciated that there was a Ranger at the landing closest to Clark's signature who could answer questions and give the history behind the monument.
My only word of warning, we were there in August and planned to have a picnic as there are several lovely spots with tables. We didn't realize that the warning sign about mosquitos at the visitor's center was serious. The mosquitoes literally chased us out of the picnic area. Wear bug spray or go in the non-bug seasons!

This is a rock. A huge rock jutting out of the ground like several others in the area. However, this rock has William Clark’s signature on it (of Lewis and Clark fame). He carved it there in 1807. Other names are on it too. Clark came through here along the Yellowstone River on his journey. Thee are other places he stopped in the area as well. You can climb up to the top by a wooden path and see breathtaking views. It also has an interpretation center with a gift shop. This is one of those stops you can make along the highway for a quick rest. We came to stay for 10 minutes and stayed an hour.

Had wanted to visit this National Monument since it was designation as such in 2001. The exhibits were very informative and well presented. Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. Hike up the monument were a bit much for this old dude ... but plenty made the trek.

A great quick stop and wonderful history lesson!
It was 100° today so it made the step-climbing with no shade somewhat uncomfortable and I rushed through it. But the nice AC in the visitors center was wonderful! Bathrooms spotless! (There are outhouses on the property too). Friendly staff.
The time of day put a glare on the Clark signature but it was still a magnificent site. The grounds are beautiful too!
Honestly I'd be happy to pay the $7 to get into the place just so I could use those clean bathrooms if I'm ever traveling through again!

I've driven by here I bet like 40 times in my life time and never stopped. I sure am glad I did this trip! It was so beautiful up on the pillar and you can see signatures in the rock as well......guess whos!?!
The visitors center has a nice interpretive area and a really nice gift shop with clean bathrooms too!
It's a nice stroll up to the boardwalk and well worth the steps up to the top.

To be able to view up close, William Clark's signature, one he engraved himself while on the Lewis and Clark expedition was amazing. To think he stood in that very spot over two hundred years ago was grand! I wouldn't be surprised if I make the hike again some day.

My husband and I went on a road trip from our apartment in Warren, Michigan and went out West. One of the States we visited was Montana. We stopped at Pompeys Pillar National Monument and were in awe at how huge it was! And actually seeing where Lewis and Clark had been at one of their sites!! Loved the Visitor's Center, the Ranger was very nice. At the Center, I purchased a sweatshirt, and put it in my rollator walker. When we drove 5 miles out, we found out that my walker wasn't in our vehicle!! So we turned around, drove 5 miles back, told the Ranger what happened, we went to the handicap parking lot, and my walker, and my sweatshirt was still there..untouched!! We were so very thankful and happy!

The Visitor's Center was well staffed, and the Ranger very helpful. The Movie was informative and I was glad we saw it -- it explained a lot of what we saw. We came at a time of year it was not very crowded, which was great for pictures and space. Anybody who is a Lewis & Clark scholar will love this stop!

We were disappointed with our visit here, as it was really nothing special. We have been to many Lewis and Clark sites, and looked forward this one, as it’s the only place you can be sure that Clark actually visited. (Other places are close, but Clark’s signature carved in the rock is the way you know here). But it was teaming with kids, the site wasn’t anything truly historic, the the signature, which we believe to be authentic, looked as if someone carved it last year. It was a good stopping point, but nothing special.

A swing and a miss! For both me and the lightning storm. I missed on actually going up the pillar and seeing William Clark’s name carved into the sandstone, and the lightning missed me. As Bob Uecker said in the movie “Major League”, “just a bit outside.”
The park itself is beautiful. A great place to stop if you’ve got a picnic packed. Walking trails, huge shade trees, and picture spots aplenty. Just serene.
The visitor’s center is likely one of the nicest I’ve been too, and the exhibits are very informative.
But what about the pillar??? When I arrived the clouds seemed fairly far away. When I stepped out of the visitor’s center I heard likely the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard, and I walked about 50 feet and every bit of shade disappeared. Lightning struck incredibly close, close enough that warning sirens activated. I spoke to a family that rushed from the pillar. The hair on their arms tingled and they said they actually felt the heat.
So no pillar story or pictures, just advice. You can check your weather apps, and you can listen to the weather report. But take a peek outside and trust your gut. Rocky Mountain weather can turn on a dime and confound meteorologists.
