The visitor center staff were very friendly and helpful. It is free to get in but donations are welcome. There were informational movies and exhibits. There is also a small gift store. The walking trails around the center were very well maintained. There is a little pond that has crawfish living in it. I wish we had more time and a 4 wheel drive to explore the backcountry areas. We may come back with our 4 wheel van and see that next time. We spent about an hour there and did enjoy it. It was cool fall weather and so was extra nice. I would think it would be very hot in the summer. We did not see any bighorn near the visitor center but you probably would if you drove back in on the dirt roads.

My wife was in Las Vegas at a convention. I tagged along, but don't really have much interest in the activities in the city, so I looked for places nearby where I could see birds and other wildlife in a setting that I don't get to go to very often. This refuge is the largest in the whole NWR system, but I only visited Corn Spring, about 20 miles north of LV on US 95, then 4 miles east on a smooth gravel road (watch carefully for the brown sign on 95)
A visitor center is being built here, but it is currently not staffed during the summer because there are not enough visitors. Didn't really know what to expect, but when I got there and walked around the area near Corn Spring, it was amazing.
There is a permanent spring here, and the water creates conditions for an environment very different from the desert that surrounds it.
A flowing stream with gurgling water flows along one of the paths, many of which are handicapped accessible, and have benches to sit and enjoy as well as shade structures along trails in the desert areas.
It was 106 degrees in Las Vegas that day, but when sitting in the shade of a large number of trees, listening to a bubbling brook flowing by, the breezes were cooling and comfortable. I spent about 1.5 hours and never got overheated or even felt the need to wear sunscreen.
The birds also enjoy the trees and permanent water, because it is so far to the nearest location where they can be found in this abundance. Saw lots of hawks, flycatchers, phoebes, sparrows, hummingbirds, etc. One, the Calliope Hummingbird was a first timer for me.
I understand that all of the seasons other than summer are even better for visiting, especially spring and fall, and very large percentage of the birds that have been seen in Nevada have been seen at Corn Spring one time or another.
Great place to spend a little time enjoying the environment. I was alone the whole time, so it was a quiet, peaceful experience.

I don't know if something has changed since 2022 and 2023 when others reviewed this place. We visited, and were excited to see big horn sheep since this place is advertised as the largest wildlife refuge outside of Alaska, but we didn't see anything. I know that they are not easy to spot, but we didn't even see a turtle.. It was a disappointing visit.
The visitor center does have exhibits, but to drive there just to look at the exhibits makes no sense to me. We visited so many amazing places during our trip that this didn't stand out at all.

We were in Las Vegas for a family wedding. The casino scene is NOT our cup of tea, so we looked for things to do other than drink and gamble! This amazing wildlife refuge is about a 40 minute drive outside of the city. The new visitor center is Platinum LEED certified, and has many interesting exhibits and a nice gift shop. We enjoyed a hike through the desert and riparian habitats to spot birds, lizards and even fish! It was a breath of fresh air after the madness of the nearby city experience.

The Desert National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful place and is close to Las Vegas. They have a new visitor center with interesting displays and a gift shop. There is a stunning HD 17 minute movie to see. You can preview the movie at:
https://vimeo.com/86424950 and their website is;
http://www.fws.gov/refuge/desert/
One thing, using my GPS, it would have taken me to the wrong location. It said the refuge was a hour and a half outside Las Vegas when really it was about a half hour. As you drive west on US-95 watch for a small sign that says Desert National Wildlife Refuge. Turn right on the dirt road. A little ways in you will see the big official sign and the visitors center is about 4 miles in. The road is dirt and was in good condition. At the vc, besides the displays and movie there is access to some of the trails. Some are concrete paths that are great for mobility limited folks like me.It was worth the trip. One last thing the vc is only open Thursday to Sunday (and select holidays) , 8am to 4:30pm.

Since the 1930s, the Desert National Wildlife Refuge (not range), has quietly provided a place to experience nature. Of course, we haven't been around that long, but it must look much the same as it did then. The website said the visitors' center was closed on the day we chose to visit, but much to our delight, we found the center open. The rangers said they were opened special for the holidays, and we were glad this was true. The new paved road leads to a beautiful visitors' center with exhibits about the wildlife and human impact on the area. From the center there are several short trails. We opted to do them all, as you can easily wind your way from the overlapping trails to each trail. One of the trails takes you by the old ranch, but up to the maintenance building. Look up and away from the ugly cellphone tower that lurks close to the trail. As it was winter when we visited, the reptiles were warm underground, but many different birds chirped and bounced around the trees. Wind whipped us as we walked along the desert floor, admiring the plant and bird life and the mountains in the distance. If you have a four-wheel drive vehicle, you can take several roads to explore further, but that wasn't the case for us. Talk to the rangers before you go wandering off though, as they are experts and can answer your questions. We found them very informative.

This is one of the great surprises in the desert surrounding Las Vegas. Lots of hiking, but you will need a pickup or SUV with good clearance to access most of the trails. It is never crowded, and the best time to visit is February/March/April if you want to see wildflowers and lots of wildlife. Summer can be tough if you're not used to hot weather. Very helpful staff (as is the case at every Nat Wildlife Refuge). Easy to reach from Vegas. Great on-site trail that can take about an hour to walk with lots of preserved old structures. If you've got time to explore outside the Vegas Strip, this is a great place to go.

The 1.6 million acre Desert National Wildlife Refuge's (UFWS) new visitor center is open at Corn Creek, as of Feb. 2014. On the far northwestern edge of the Las Vegas valley, it's well worth the trip - about 45 minutes drive from the Las Vegas Strip, off US-95N. The 11,000 square foot, LEED certified building features interpretative exhibits, a beautiful film, a book shop with a good selection of local maps, plus helpful staff and volunteers. Hardened, accessible trails outside lead around naturally spring-fed ponds to spectacular views of the Spring Mountains (Mt. Charleston) and the Sheep Range. Corn Creek was originally a pioneering ranch property and remnants of the ranch buildings, orchards and ponds remain, as well as prehistoric native American and railroading features and artifacts. Bird watchers have always enjoyed Corn Creek, but its previous lack of amenities made it a well-kept desert secret. Open Fri-Sun, 8AM-4:30PM and selected holidays. Fun for all ages. There's no food, but you can stop at nearby Las Vegas Paiute Golf Course, before or after, for a great meal and/or gas for your vehicle!

For our small group of mostly senior friends DNWR was perhaps our favorite site in a week's visit to Las Vegas. It is located within a half-hour of the city limits off US 95, and we came upon it by chance driving along the highway.

While it is called the largest refuge for wildlife and birds outside Alaska, and was established to protect bighorn sheep, the portion most visitors can reach by car or on foot is actually quite small, and it has five short paved trails of which three are wheelchair compatible and offer visitors an opportunity to see a small portion of the Mohave Desert representative of millions of acres of surrounding desert. Two trails are only one-tenth-of-a-mile long, with the others not more than half-mile loops.

The visitor center is modern, informative and staffed with helpful rangers/volunteers. The gift shop is excellent. The educational opportunity in the center and immediately around it offer insight for visitors without going much beyond the center. When we approached the front doors in early May (spring) we passed by numerous flowering cacti and other plants that offered a cascade of bright colors unexpected in a desert.

The trails were closed to walking based on the extreme heat the day we were there, but we found our visit fascinating anyhow just seeing the center and walking around outside it.

For birders, an Ash-throated Flycatcher had made the back patio of the building his home while he loudly sought a mate. The National Audubon Society in 2013 listed this area as an 'Important Bird Area', so the refuge is especially appropriate for bird lovers. But anyone, especially with children, will find DNWR an important part of understanding wildlife and the desert that covers so much of the Southwest.
