Few people visiting on day we were there so almost had a personalized tour. By learning about the house, learning some Granville history too.

We had a wonderfully, informative and entertaining tour given by Fiona. She was delightful and made the tour even more interesting with her wit and anecdotes.

Especially enjoyed the tale of Victoria Woodhull and seeing the figure come out on the hour. Great location in heart of Village of Granville.

Went to see the house which is wonderful. Currently an exhibit of undergarments from the 1860’s is exceptional. A great display of the layers of clothing worn years ago. A must see!

We had been to lunch in Granville on several occasions through town, but looking for something to do on a warm but grey Saturday, came also to also explore a little. Saw that the Historic Society was closed for the winter after Oct, (except for private, paid tours) on their website, but the Robbins Hunter Museum looked interesting. Located across the street from the Broadway Pub where we had a delicious lunch, we were delighted to see on approaching the entry, the sign honoring Victoria Woodhull, a prominent woman in politics who was born in tiny Homer just down Rte. 661, where I grew up. Bobby Hunter, as he was known, dedicated one of the rooms in the new addition of the house to women's rights, and the clock tower to Woodhull. She emerges from the clock on the 1/2 hour, so we interrupted our very interesting tour given by excellent docents to come out and see it. The tour this day focused on the Christmas trees in each room and the ornaments which represented different historical periods. The website gives a lot of information about the house and its many programs aside from the free house tours (please give a donation), a candle light walking tour of the town and the house in Dec. "The mission of the Robbins Hunter Museum is to inspire appreciation and understanding of the architecturally significant Avery-Downer House, its collections, and the stories of those who lived there." There is a little restaurant right behind the museum Steam Roller Bagel with delicious looking savory sandwiches and treats, but we decided to go back across Broadway to Village Coffee Co. for coffee and pie, which has a more spacious sitting area. We also drove up Broadway five minutes to Jones Road to see an art show at Bryn Du.

Interesting place! Tour could move a bit faster but is a lot to see. Displaying lots of old Halloween items not commonly known.

I wanted to show my out of country aunt and her kids a little slice of American history, and thought the museum would do an amazing job on educating them. When we walked in, there was no one there to greet us nor was there any info on the website about waiting at the door for someone to come to us. We looked around the room for a friendly face but there was none to be found. Instead there was a salty librarian looking lady who remarked "you shouldn't walk around the house on our own, there would be too much lost on you" in a very rude way. In our defense, we were looking for someone to help us a bit in navigating the museum. There was no friendly American smile or a courteous greeting, more of a scorn for the out of towners who didn't know any better. I bet if we were educated on the wonderful history of the beautiful house by a friendly tour guide who wasn't on her high horse, it would've been the slice of Americana we were hoping for.

Just phenomenal. We wandered into the museum by accident and stayed for over an hour. We were astonished that the tour is free because it was so much fun. Tracey, the tour guide, is a wealth of knowledge and the house is very spacious. The front door sticks so you may have to go around to the side. The history of the house is amazing. What a great way to highlight the first woman presidential nominee!! Plus the restoration of the house is just brilliant. We are going to host an event there later this year because the house, furnishings, accents, and grounds are so gorgeous. This is a great tour for families, couples, groups, ....basically everyone. We counted 7 or 8 bedrooms in the house. (Some are being restored but we got to peak at them). The antique dealer added a brilliant addition to the house and we loved viewing all the twinkling lights during the day. We're going to make sure we go visit during Christmas time so we can see them in addition to the ginormous tree. What fun!!

Well worth a mini-tour courtesy of the on-site deacon who indicates this is the 2nd most significant Greek Revival home in the US. She provided lots of background regarding the history of the house. Be sure to check out the bell tower that puts on a show exactly on the hour.
