My wife and I have passed the old observatory many, many times and watched the new observatory take shape. We went on 18th March as a birthday treat and we were not disappointed. We has a good look round this wonderful building and the went into the Planetarium Show, which turned out to be an excellent experience, conducted by a young astronomer who certain kept informed and entertained. The auditorium was full and the applause at the end was thoroughly deserved.
We look to go back soon to see the sky at night and look through the telescope.
Well worth a visit!!

Very friendly welcoming volunteers. Well explained on the website beforehand. We came before a planetarium show and looked at The Science Centre, in what used to be a reservoir. Various bits to look at and read about including the history of the reservoir and area, models of what would have been in the reservoir; and at the time of our visit the temporary exhibition was about journeys to the moon, involving lots of information to read about, and (miniature) models of the rockets etc. that have been to the moon/into space. (For us, who have an interest in space but don't know much about it and didn't want to do a huge amount of reading, just bits of information, around 30 minutes was a good amount of time to look at what we wanted to here). In the Science Centre, because it used to a reservoir (which makes it very interesting to look at and be in), it is a bit cold, and smells a bit damp - the day that we went was sunshine outside, but being out of that it wasn't warm in there, but was cooler, but not uncomfortable.
We didn't eat in the café, but there is a lovely, modern, clean café, with multiple tables, plenty of chairs, and large windows overlooking the original observatory and some green fields immediately outside. Also there's some merchandise for sale from the café.
Going into the planetarium show itself, the seats are at a slightly leaning backward angle, and are able to tilt back more as you sit in them. Seats are not too close together, row to row. Sitting in them for a while however made my back feel quite stiff (would have been better with a cushion!) Looking upward to a dome above. At the start of the planetarium show they show some trailers for other shows. We saw a show that finished with a presenter-led talk, with an astronomer in person talking to us, and at the end of his talk there was space to ask questions. And he asked us a couple of times, for example, which of these 2 planets we wanted to learn about. The talk was up to date, telling us about recent (just past, and upcoming) sightings in the sky, for example a lunar eclipse that happened the weekend before, and being able to see one of the planets for a few sunrises in the next couple of weeks. The presenter spoke clearly and at a good pace - very comfortable to follow. The show (From Earth to Universe) and the talk were given at an accessible level, and did not require prior knowledge.
There's some parking, with few spaces for electrical parking, and there's disabled parking. There is also a lift inside, making The Science Centre (below) and the planetarium (above) accessible.
Overall an enjoyable experience, and would recommend if this is something that you're interested in, or even mildly curious to find out a bit about.

The show it's self was excellent, but the cafe staff were ignorant and rude, lost my order then tried to say it was my fault and insinuated I hadn't payed for it.

We visited the planetarium at the Observatory this afternoon.
We visited the exhibition and cafe.
The exhibition had lots of very interesting information but the kids struggled with the lack of interactive or easier to understand info.
The cafe was clean, staff very friendly and good prices for a tourist attraction site.
We viewed the 'We are astronauts' show and all 3 of my kids really enjoyed it and were asking for it to continue once it was finished.
They enjoyed the explanations on planets and upcoming Astro events they can look forward to but did start to get fidgety towards the end =)
All the staff were lovely, had no issues parking and the kids had an enjoyable visit.

6 years ago we attended an astronomy course at the observatory, which was excellent and presented by knowledgeable dedicated volunteers. Yesterday we went to see a show at the new planetarium, which was a brilliant experience in a fabulous building based in a converted 19th century brick reservoir. A wonderful place for all ages.

The Sherwood Observatory is the new must visit place to go with or without children. Alot of planning has obviously gone into making this an interesting venue to visit. From the warm welcome on entry, a beautiful exhibition space crammed with information relating to the site history and a plotted history of space exploration. You then rise into the new part of the building where you relax in comfortable reclining seats to enjoy the 360° screen followed by beautiful views from the café whilst enjoying a drink and snacks.
