Had a great visit to Cresswell Crags, had a look round the exhibition by ourselves before joining Hannah in a guided tour of the exhibits, Hannah was brilliant, really knowledgeable and so passionate about her subject, what a credit to the Crags.
Then off for a stroll and a hot chocolate from the horsebox cafe, theres a board near the entrance to CC that says "we serve probably the best hot chocolate in the world" or something like that, well you know they made be right, it was gorgeous!
Next we joined Sarah for a "life in the ice age" tour round the grounds and into the caves, Sarah certainly knew her stuff, which she delivered well and with a quirky sense of humour that we enjoyed, really fascinating tour.
After our tour we had a good long walk round the place by ourselves, enjoying peering into the smaller barrierd off caves and enjoying the scenery, but such a disappointment to see that some of our fellow "humans" think its acceptable to chuck their rubbish through the iron railings into the caves "yeah someone else will clear it up". Brilliant!!!
Cresswell is a really good day out and I'm sure we will be back

A really great day out for all ages, for anyone curious about the lives of our prehistoric ancestors, or if you are simply looking for a walk or a picnic in a stunning setting by a peaceful lake below cliffs, woods and caves!

We booked a LIFE IN THE ICE AGE cave visit online. The excellent tour was led by Hannah, who was brilliant with both children and adults. We could handle a stone age hand axe, understand stone age people's lives, and see where they would have lived. The whole trip made the paleolithic era come to life

We had a lovely couple of days visiting Creswell Crags. We are a young family. We started by going on the ice age tour, our tour guide, Simon, really went the extra mile to include our 7 and 5 year olds in his tour. He was so knowledgeable and clearly passionate about his job. He managed to make the tour fun and insightful for all ages in our tour group. He helped cover topics that our child would be doing in year 3 which he didn’t have to do but was more than happy to answer any questions we had and make history more personable, real and fun! Our second day visit we walked around the gorge and had a look at the caves ourselves-we would’ve loved to have gone on a different tour but unfortunately they were fully booked on that day. I would highly recommend a visit here. It’s a hidden gem with extremely friendly and knowledgable staff.

This place is just brilliant. Dragged my wife along as she'd never heard of it and we were both blown away by the visit. Every aspect is well thought out, beautifully presented and great value. The car park is right next door to the clean and delightfully designed Visitor Centre. The cafe is great value too. And the scenery there is breath taking. We did all 3 tours, each of which gave us scintillating glimpses into the ancestors who used the area and especially the caves. Mind boggling to see with your own eyes cave art that was done 13,000+ years ago. We drove up from Bournemouth and it was absolutely worth the drive.

the tickets booked online are valid for another visit within the year. Lovely surprise and we will definitely use them.
The views of the Gorge are spectacular and tranquil.
Our guide of the cave looking at art helped to put everything into context. he was knowledgeable and patient with our untrained eyes trying to hone in on the markings in the dark. This trip has certainly kindled an interest.
It would make an excellent school trip too, all ages catered for. I cannot recommend it enough.

Been on all three cave tours now, each one different to the last, with so much to learn. Guides are always friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and engaging. Not only are they fascinating tours into the past they also make you consider your own place in history. Came with a feeling of awe each time. Can’t thank the guides enough.
Lovely little museum that fills in the background behind Creswell. Great addition to the tours; don’t miss it out.
Walking round the Crags is a must, with a great circular walk taking in other local attractions too.
Cafe does some nice light bites and tasty treats!
Great place to spend a few hours what ever the weather.

Having been on the 'Life in the Ice Age' cave tour last year, which we thought was really very good and interesting, we decided to take our teenage g/daughters on the 'Art in the Ice Age' cave tour as a treat. The blog on the Crags Cave tours says of this particular tour 'see the best of the ancient engravings' so we were very excited about seeing them. However, the reality was disappointing as the etchings (there were only 4), were virtually impossible to make out inspite of our tour guide repeatedly...... and repeatedly...... shining two different torch lights and a red dot light them. Altho our guide appeared knowledgeable, she spent far too much time shining these various types of light on these 4 etchings in the vein hope we would be able to
recognise them and also too much time showing us pictures of cave drawings ftom other caves on an iPad......presumably done to eek out the tour time. You only really step just inside this cave, whereas on the 'Life in the Ice Age' tour, you can explore two parts of the cave which was much more exciting. In comparison, sadly, we found this tour quite boring after a while, even though we enjoy learning about cave history. We also did not feel it was worth the admission fee for this particular cave tour and should be a bit cheaper as there really isn't much to see and you don't get a chance to explore the cave and only get to stand just inside.

Beautiful site and lovely walk around the gorge (the walk takes about 30-40 minutes at a very leisurely pace). Really interesting museum. It's amazing how much information can be presented in a relatively small space. Make sure you go downstairs too to read about the Witch marks and see the latest information on what they are doing now re the archaeology. Allow time to take it all in. If you are doing a tour I'd recommend doing the museum first. We did Life in the Ice Age tour. Hannah our guide - and an archaeologist- was great. I have gained an interest in archaeology from the mesolithic and paleolithic period over the last couple of years thanks to excavations in the cave beneath Pembroke Castle, so it was great to chat to a very knowledgeable guide, passionate about her subject. We had a mixed group of Adults and young children, and Hannah fielded questions really well from the young kids seamlessly incorporating the answers into her tour. I'm sure all the kids now want to be archaeologists!

Hi. Want to visit the site and go on a tour hopefully----my wife has a temporary problem if she has to walk too fast or on extremely uneven surfaces-----( 5 months into recovery from a broken leg). Does this exclude her? ( we hope not as pre-history is our interest). Thanks Dave

Hi there, yes there is a place to lock up bikes - it's at the far end of the visitor centre from the main entrance, close to the café terrace. Hope to see you soon!

Caves are only accessible on cave tours. You get a helmet to protect your head against the rock but in most places you can stand up straight no problem.

Is it possible to visit some smaller caves without paying for entry along the valley or are they all priced?
Rédigé le 15 août 2017
As others have answered, you have to pay for the caves. We live about 15 miles away, and first went for a walk, coffee and museum visit. This gave us the impression that we wanted to visit the caves as well, so we returned some weeks later (with friends) to visit the caves, and it was well worth it.
Rédigé le 17 septembre 2017
Can we visit both caves for £7.50 or is there a slightly higher charge for visiting both? They both look so interesting, we are having difficulty choosing just one!
Rédigé le 21 mars 2017
It depends on the season and the weather conditions - not all caves are accessible, but those that are, are only open when the conditions are right. If more than one is open, the guides will take you in.
