寒い!!!
déc. 2019

Do it Clockwise, IMHO
nov. 2019
Another review above mentions hiking in a counter-clockwise direction--with the aim of saving the best sites for last. WELL, we just completed this hike in Nov2019, and I can say, I am a healthy fit individual, but I recommend doing the hike in the standard Clockwise fashion. Going Counterclockwise means that you will be climbing UPHILL for extremely long stretches toward the middle and end of the walk--across boulders and tough terrain. Im not a world class hiker, but it seemed VERY challenging to do it this way. If you go Clockwise, you'll encounter long uphill climbs at the outset, but on milder terrain, and you'll be going downhill for some of the toughest sections.

Also, separate note: If you come to the junction for the Platypus Path, and are facing the divided path, the sign is somewhat confusing as to which side is the path, and which is the PP. The PP is a dead-end vista, but is also a long downhill climb. It is the LEFT HAND path. If you want to avoid a down-up dead end, take the right hand main path, and save 30-40 minutes.

A tarn is a mountain lake!!
oct. 2018 • En couple
Yes, I had to google it, haha.

This was a surprise - we went to Mount Field to walk around the lake at the bottom and go to some falls, but we saw a sign that said 'Alpine Hiking'. We followed the track to the 'Tarn Shelf' and it was stunning. There was still snow on the ground, but there is a wooden platform/track for most of those sections. The views along the way were absolutely breathtaking. I hadn't heard about this place before but were so happy that we stumbled across it. If you like a decent hike, skip some of the smaller ones and do this walk - you won't regret it.

Stunning even in the rain
mars 2018 • En couple
The Tarn Shelf Loop trail is an exceptional hike. Massive variety of scenery and natural ecosystems to enjoy. Unfortunately we headed up there in low cloud so didn't get the extensive views we expected but the eerie environment created in the sheltered basin at the top was still special (see photos).

You have to drive around 10km along a dirt road to get to the car park at lake Dobson. From there you hike up for a while to the tarn shelf, past glacial lakes, through a creepy dead forest, over marshlands amd back down through rainforest before going through the alien world of the Pandani Grove.

I would recommend using a GPX map on your smart phone if cloud is low. The 'Alltrails' app is good for this. This will ensure you stick to the trail. Get a map from the tourist info also.

Lots of scrambling up/down rocks so attention is needed on the ground alot.

Its about a 15km loop that took us around 4.5 hours with breaks and photos - although we are particularly fit.

We managed to fit in the short walk to Russell Falls after the hike too (30mins return) from the tourist info hut.

A Great Walk

We parked up and headed up to the Tarn shelf on a nice clear and warm day. Fantastic views, clean fresh air and a sense of being alone in nature. Can't recommend highly enough.

Stunning on a clear day
mars 2018 • Entre amis
It took eight hours but was well worth it with plenty of photography stops along the way, quite diverse even though there is plenty of tarns. Some had dried up, it would've been nice to have seen them full. We walked from Lake Webster and then onto the shelf so we had a downhill walk back to the car, which was greatly appreciated by the end. A few huts to stop at for a rest or shelter depending on weather. Loved the Pencil Pines and even saw some frogs and fish.

One of the Best Walks in Tasmania.
janv. 2018 • Entre amis
I took a friend on this walk as I've done it before and knew he would love the ever changing variety of scenery. I prefer to start from the lower point heading towards Lake Webster first. This avoids the uninspiring and very draining walk up the service road to the chalets up on top. The track starts generally downhill and there are sidetracks to Platypus Tarn and Lake Seal. Upon arrival at Lake Webster you cross the pretty Broad River over a suspension bridge before tackling the punishing hill up ahead. This can be very draining however upon reaching the top you encounter the amazingly beautiful Twilight Tarn complete with quaint old hut with amazing artifacts within. Also this is the only place you will find a toilet on this 5 hour walk. Then it's following the undulations of the ridge tops passing Twisted Tarn, crossing a beautiful flowing stream which is ideal for replenishing your water bottles. Walking along this top section you will notice a big improvement in scenery and arrival at Lake Newdegate is a welcome sight. The final haul is across the Tarn Shelf which is an arduous undulating walk over rocks but the views across the landscape are stunning and well worth it. The Rodway hut then comes into view and then it's a short climb up to the pathway which leads thankfully all downhill to Lake Dobson. It's always worth mentioning that this is quite a serious bushwalk and that adequate supplies of food and water should be taken along with good protective clothing against the weather which can change very quickly. Once you're up on top it's very exposed and you don't want to be caught unprepared. Also fitness is important, as it is a very draining walk if you're not physically prepared.
This would be my favourite day walk in Tassie if I had to choose.
