Stopped here to smell the oregon coastal ocean breeze. The sun was shining all day on our ride in the convertible with the top down.

For us, the Cape Falcon Trail in Oswald West State Park was a poetic journey that took us to the very edge of nature's enchantment. As Cherry Wonderdog ventured along the path, the air became heavy with the scent of the sea, mingling with the sweet fragrance of moss-covered trees. The rugged coastline unfurled before me like an eternal canvas, with dramatic cliffs plunging into the restless Pacific Ocean below. The symphony of crashing waves served as a haunting melody, luring me deeper into a realm where time seemed suspended. Each step unveiled a hidden treasure—a secluded beach, adorned with ancient driftwood, or a viewpoint offering a glimpse of the untamed horizon. This ethereal experience awakened my senses and reminded me of the fragile beauty that exists in the wild. The Cape Falcon Trail is a pilgrimage for the soul, where one can lose themselves in the embrace of nature's sublime poetry.

I drove at least 60 miles of the Oregon coast stopping at various points. In my opinion, Oswald Beach was my favorite. Stunning scenery but yet less crowded than Cannon Beach. You do have to walk a bit down to the actual beach, but you're hiking through the rainforest. Take time to stop and enjoy the rocky coast when you get to the end.

It was very cloudy, we could not see far away. We walked to short sand beach through some very beautiful old trees. The trees are very beautiful. We saw people were surfing here.

The Short Sand Beach Trail (see All Trails) is a world-class trail. Short but very nice walk to the beach alongside a creek.

This is a relatively flat 4.8 mile there and back trail through woods, although there are lots of tree roots to navigate. It leads to the end of the cape with good ocean views and a few glimpses, en route, between the trees, to the lovely beach below.

Free parking at the trail head and toilets in the adjacent car park.

I had seen reviews of the Elk Flats Trail and it sounded like an easy, rewarding hike. It is located on Hwy 101 within 3 miles of Manzanita. If you are headed north, parking is on you left (between the highway and the ocean). The lot is not huge nor tiny; there were plenty of spaces when we visited (mid-week after lunch).

The trail descends between bushes on either side about 5 feet high. When we visited in July, my daughter noticed movement in the grass at the base of the bushes (repeatedly) and we eventually saw that this was due to small black snakes slithering away as we approached. I only mention this as it was interesting, not because it was threatening. Still, keep watch forward to make sure no larger snakes are sunning themselves on the path, I suppose.

The path is rocky, probably (I'm guessing) to counteract the potential mud when it is rainy. It was dry when we visited, but the small rocks make the surface slightly uneven.

You descend sharply for the first 100 yards or so. Then the slope becomes more gradual. A bit further along, there is an intersection with the trail to Devil's Cauldron. We ignored that and kept going. You continue to mostly descend and eventually pass into a more shaded, forested section. My wife asked some other hikers about this, and they confirmed that the trail descended to the beach a bit further ahead. This was not what I had read and was longer than we wanted to hike at the time (as we intended to visit other sites further up 101). So we back tracked. Along the way, we noted signs out on a bluff above the coast, and we surmised this was where the other trail led.

When we again reached the intersection, we took the Devil's Cauldron side trail. That went out to the cliffs within 200 yards or so. I think that was probably the route I had seen described, though this spur trail wasn't mentioned. At the end of the trail, there is a fence to keep you away from what is at least a 100-foot drop into the 'cauldron' - a small cove where the waves surge in periodically. It looks like it may wear away an arch in another few thousand years, but for now it is a cul-de-sac. It was impressive to watch.

Depending on how much time you have, this is a worthwhile hike.

Just driving through but we did hike out the .3 miles to Devil’s Cauldron. Breathtaking. I wish we could have spent a day hiking this park.

The short walk through the magical forest on a well worn path to the short sands beach would be a shame for anyone to miss. Easy walk and the views, beach and trees are simply awesome!
